Is this Serta Matress good?

We are considering buying a new bed for our very tall 15 year old son. He is 15 and 6’2". It seems like a Queen would be the right choice. We went to Sears today and they have a Item# 08298088000 /Mfr# 500204851-1050Description: Perfect Sleeper Bradshaw Firm Queen Mattress with box springs and frame for $650. Is this a good bed? Is this a good price?

Hi mmitch,

The first place I would start your research is the mattress shopping tutorial here which includes all the basic information, steps, and guidelines you will need to make the best possible choice … and more importantly know how and why to avoid the worst ones.

Two of the most important links in the tutorial that I would especially make sure you’ve read are post #2 here which has more about the different ways to choose a suitable mattress (either locally or online) that is the best “match” for you in terms of PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) that can help you assess and minimize the risks of making a choice that doesn’t turn out as well as you hoped for and post #13 here which has more about the most important parts of the “value” of a mattress purchase which can help you make more meaningful quality/value comparisons between mattresses in terms of suitability, durability, and value.

I would avoid the major brands such as Simmons, Sealy, and Serta (see the guidelines here) or any mattress where you aren’t able to find out the quality and durability of the materials inside it (see this article).

I would avoid it and follow the steps in the tutorial one at a time to find a much higher quality/value choice.

Once you get to step 3 if you let me know your city or zip code I’d be happy to let you know about any of the better options or possibilities I’m aware of in your area.

Thank you for the great response and advice? I am in Muncie, IN 47304 and would love to hear of any advice you have for better options / possibilities.

Hi mmitsch,

The better options or possibilities I’m aware of in and around the Indianapolis area (which would include Muncie) and subject to the quality/value guidelines I linked in my last reply are listed in post #2 here.

I would probably make sure that you include http://www.holderbedding.net/ (factory direct) and http://www.wallsfurniture.net/index.html (Bowles Mattress), and http://www.gillbros.com/ (Jamison) in your research.
