ISO new mattress after 11 years! Would like to upgrade from the Tuft & Needle 10

Hello all! It’s been a long time - this place sure look different from the last time I logged in.

Anyway, years ago I bought the T&N 10 when it first came out and I loved it. A decade later, I am ready for a new mattress and I also have a larger budget.

Anyway, I liked the firmness of the original 10 and that was what attracted me to it. I used to be a side sleeper/stomach but over time it has become more uncomfortable to sleep on my side - could be related to the bed just being old. No idea. The only position I can sleep comfortable in now is on my back. I have some shoulder issues now from the gym so it’s possible I need something softer/more supportive/moldable?? to return to sleeping on my side.

Looking for a non-toxic, natural bed that will last a while. I do not want a box spring. I have a Thuma bed frame.

Husband is allergic to latex, not sure if that rules out latex beds entirely if they’re encased in a fabric and he’s not making direct contact with it.

Can visit stores in the NYC area to try things out in person. Not really sure where to begin my search but would like to spend a reasonable amount on a bed that will serve me well for a long enough time. I would like to avoid brands like Sealy, etc.

Thanks all!

Hi maskedrose.

Welcome back to the Mattress Forum.

Sorry to hear the bed you loved is no longer meeting your needs. However, that’s not uncommon and it definitely is coming up on the end of it’s natural “lifespan” if you well.

This generally isn’t an issue, but in the rare case it can be. Have you ever tested a latex bed to see what his skin reaction is?

Some options that come to mind are the @WinndomMattress collection - you may wish to review the Dogwood.

The Essential from @DLX is also worth a gander, as well as the Quail and Signature Hybrid from @NestBedding

You might also want to look at the @GhostBed Classic as well as the offerings from @kensigmamattress

you can see I’ve also tagged all of these Trusted Member’s here so you can ask any questions that may arise.

I hope this gives you a useful starting point.

Thanks for the mention, @NikkiTMU!

For those looking for something with more cushioning for side sleeping, we’d recommend our Premier Hybrid 14". One of its best features is the zipper, which allows us to adjust the comfort layer to make it firmer or softer within the first 120 nights or even years down the road.

Keep in mind that shoulder pain is often related to having a pillow that doesn’t work well with the mattress. You want a mattress that provides enough cushioning and softness, but the pillow also needs to be thick and firm enough to keep your head from tilting toward the mattress. If your head tilts down, your shoulder presses deeper into the mattress, which can increase discomfort.

Coming from an all-foam mattress like Tuft & Needle, you may need a bit more time to adjust to a hybrid feel.

We are not an all-natural brand, but we do not use fiberglass, and all of our foams are CertiPUR-US certified—so it’s a step in the right direction. If you’re specifically looking for an all-natural option, latex is often the only material that offers both natural composition and enough cushioning for side sleeping. Just note that most natural and organic mattresses without latex tend to be very firm unless you move up to something like a Vi-Spring—which can cost over $10,000. We don’t make or sell those.

Our mattresses do not require a box spring.

We sell online and do not have any showrooms in NYC. As mentioned, the Premier has a zipper so you can access the 3" comfort layer to adjust the feel, and worst case, you’re still covered by our 120-night trial.

Feel free to ask any questions—and if you’re comfortable sharing approximate height and weight, we’d be happy to give an honest assessment of whether our mattress would be a good fit.

Hey there! For more background on the shoulders - I do martial arts so the shoulder problems are more related to my hobby/competing than my pillow, unfortunately. I had shoulder surgery two years ago and slept pain free for a while but the discomfort returned eventually.

I have the original 3 inch purple pillow and even doubled up, if I try to sleep on my side, my shoulders hurt despite the angle/pressure stuff eliminated.

I’m 5’4 120lbs and my partner is 6ft 230lbs. We are both athletic. It seems like he can sleep on anything. He slept on a lumpy old mattress with a huge dip in the middle and was perfectly satisfied with it.

Thanks so much for the additional context about your shoulder. That definitely helps paint a clearer picture. It sounds like the discomfort you’re experiencing is less about the mattress or pillow and more about the long-term wear and tear from martial arts and the aftermath of shoulder surgery. That’s a tough combination, and unfortunately, it’s one that a pillow or mattress might not be able to fully fix.

We’re not medical professionals, so we can’t diagnose or make clinical recommendations, but based on anecdotal feedback from customers over the years, we’ve seen a pattern. When people have shoulder issues especially post-injury or surgery even very soft mattresses can still cause pain when sleeping on the side. It’s not always about pressure relief or alignment at that point. Sometimes, it’s just that the body can’t tolerate that sleeping position anymore, regardless of the surface. It’s incredibly frustrating especially when side sleeping is your go-to.

As for your partner, he sounds like the classic example of the “sleeps on anything” type. We all know someone like that. I’ve heard stories of people sleeping soundly on sagging futons, twenty-year-old innersprings, or even half-deflated air mattresses. It’s impressive. In cases like his, it probably doesn’t make sense to spend big on something ultra-luxurious. Something well-made, decently supportive, and not outrageously expensive is probably all he’ll ever need.

One thing to consider is how our bodies change over time. In our 20s, we might have been able to sleep on the floor, the couch, or even in a car and wake up feeling refreshed. But as we age, that resilience starts to fade. You wake up stiff, sore, or just plain tired from sleeping the “wrong” way. So what worked even a few years ago may not be cutting it now. I’ve heard that from countless people who suddenly find themselves mattress shopping in their 40s or 50s for the first time in a while, wondering why everything suddenly feels too hard, too soft, or just not right.

If you’re still on the hunt for something that actually feels comfortable, one of the best things you can do is head to a few local stores and just try things out. It gives you a frame of reference. You’ll start to notice which types of mattresses feel supportive versus those that feel like they’re cutting off circulation. That information can be incredibly helpful. NYC actually has a lot of options with everything from boutique showrooms to the usual big-box suspects. And if you fall in love with something while shopping locally, we always encourage buying it locally. Supporting local, small businesses is good for the community. If you find something you love, we’re also happy to help if you’re still on the fence.

Feel free to report back with what you try, what you liked, what felt off. We can help interpret those experiences and guide you toward something that might be a better long-term fit. Finding the right mattress is part science, part trial and error, and sometimes just a bit of luck. But we’re here to help however we can.

Thank you @NikkiTMU for the recommendation!

@maskedrose Thank you for sharing so much context about what you’re looking for in your next mattress! We are constantly searching for the latest and greatest materials to maximize the longevity and comfort of our mattresses. Our customer reviews showcase our success in that quest!

Our company is located in Virginia, and we have been handcrafting mattresses for nearly four decades. Based on your criteria, I think you would love our Azalea model we have just released!

As for non-toxic, our Azalea mattress is made with CertiPUR-US foam. This means the foams are low-VOC and free from harmful chemicals and heavy metals.

Our Azalea also has a 100% organic cotton cover, so it checks the natural component box as well!

We combine two of our highest-quality foams in this mattress.

  1. Our Elevate foam is incredibly long-lasting and has been tested to be 60% greater in longevity than the industry standard. This means the foam will keep the same feel for years. This foam is designed to have a similar feel to latex while being latex-free, so no worries for your husband’s allergy.

  2. Second, we use our Air Support foam. This foam has an incredible temperature control feature. It remains a cool, comfortable temperature regardless of how warm your body gets or how warm or cool your room is!

Both of these foams are scientifically designed to provide support and relieve pressure points, helping your body to heal that shoulder injury from the gym while your body is in recovery mode in your sleep!
