ISO new mattress after a too firm one for 10 years, hoping to get it right for the next 10

I was set, but as it comes time to purchase I was reading a few more reviews of people feeling all these tiny wiggles through the latex and describing it as jello, from the exact mattress I plan to buy. The sleepez organic latex with split layers. Then I was feeling the sample latex layers from them and I can feel little vibrations when moving. Or if I tap one side of the six inch square I can feel it on the other. Granted that’s a tiny square, but I worry I’m one of those weirdly sensitive ones that can feel everything. Or I may just get used to tiny wiggles and totally tune it out and be so comfortable I don’t notice. And the consensus seems to be that some people are totally fine, and others feel like they can feel the whole bed slightly vibrating or can even feel their partner wiggling their feet. My husband tosses and turns and often goes to bed later or gets up earlier than me, and if I wake from that then I just lost up to 1-2 hours of sleep adding it up on both ends. Granted me may sleep better and toss and turn less with a more comfortable mattress.

So just thinking through how motion transfer works, I’m wondering if more layers like cotton and wool in between base layers and a comfort layer would help me not feel anything. Hence maybe a thinner latex mattress to mimic the first two layers of the sleepez, and then a separate topper to mimic the top layer. I also read some naplab stuff that rated the sleepez poorly for motion transfer, but then I looked at their test and they compared motion transfer like apples to apples using two different methods and magically arrived at some brands with heavy advertising budgets being way better, when in the video they looked identical or worse. The one they rated the best I could see a big shockwave through the whole mattress when they dropped their ball on it. Sounds like most people like the mattress I plan to get, so hopefully I’m like most people. But storing the boxes for 90 days and then having to pack everything up somehow and drop it off to ship back to return sounds like a hassle if I do find it wiggly.

I also wonder how much motion transfer has to do with the cover and how stretchy it is. I did like the super stretchy cover of the avocado I tried in store, and the sample from sleepez feels like it doesn’t stretch in all directions. But maybe it just needs to break in. Haven’t seen any other options that allow for split comfort and adjustability, also with wool in the top layer for temperature regulation. Unless I get something with a stretchy cotton cover and have a separate wool comfort layer, which I guess would also help with motion isolation

I was looking at the latex mattress factory luxerion hybrid and wondering if that would be better at motion isolation than the all latex option. I see mixed things about all latex or latex hybrids being better for motion isolation. The luxerion has a small foam layer at the very bottom which seems like it would help absorb motion. But three inches of latex over the coils sounds like not that much for comfort.

That’s a good point because I had the Avocado waterproof mattress protector on my previous bamboo mattress and it was fine, but on the Avocado green or any of my makeshift DIY all latex builds I hated it! It created this dreaded “drum” effect and ruined the entire feel of the mattress. Although the Avocado green was ruined for me no matter what I did to it lol

I would say that a generous return policy is essential for a purchase like this. You just don’t know how you or your husband will like it until you actually sleep on it, for about a month or so. That’s the tricky part! Seeing/trying in person and a good return policy are my two deal breakers after all I’ve been through this past year. Major lessons learned.

I’m curious how the mattress makers one felt totally great for motion isolation and didn’t have the drum effect even though it was also all latex. The Mattress Makers all latex builds look similar to APM with the dual comfort, but I’ve seen stuff about that feeling like jello. Which makes me especially curious about why you felt nothing when someone was jumping on the bed for the all latex model you ordered. Is there really that much variation in the feel of latex? Or maybe a 6" core with a 3" comfort layers has different motion isolation compared to three 3" layers?

That’s a good question. Have you visited any local stores who sell all latex mattresses? That would be the best bet! It’s so hard to tell otherwise. :frowning:

Unfortunately there aren’t any in my area. Avocado is the only thing I could find to even check motion isolation, and it’s not great.

Oh yeah avocado was the worst all around for me. Way different than the mattress I chose from Mattress Makers, thank goodness. Avocado actually makes an all latex mattress, but they didn’t have it at my location.. you might want to ask them to see if they carry it at yours?
