i just ordered the first piece of my future mattress. this:
it came out to $338 with shipping to NY ( 3 inches thick, 24 ILD, Queen Size )
i’ll try to keep this thread as a blog or diary of the mattress construction. i will not be ordering all of the parts at the same time - instead i will order the final pieces of the puzzle based on how soft or firm the first layers are going to feel.
by the way, does anybody know if i could get a version of this slow talalay GL in other ILDs ? or is it only 24 ?
As far as I know it comes in 15, 21, and 27 ILD. When Latex International first listed it on their site they listed different ILD’s (including 24 ILD) and then corrected it so there may be some carryover from the initial ILD’s although I don’t know this for sure.
it mentions the ILDs but says Fast / Slow - so doesn’t necessarily say that Slow specifically is available in them. also since i purchased ILD of 24 and 24 isn’t even listed that raises doubts as well.
i decided to go with HR over Latex to reduce the bounce. i realize HD would have had even less bounce but that would have been extremism already
also i decided to go with only a 2" layer so i don’t prematurely run out of options with layer combinations. with more thinner layers versus few thick layers i should be able to make finer adjustments and at a lower cost.
9" for $910 with 78% of the thickness from Talalay and 22% from HR foam.
so i was able to cancel one of the HR foam sheet orders and change the other one to 40 ILD ( it turned out they didn’t have 34 ILD to begin with, only 28 or 40 and since i’m going with 28 Talalay i had to switch the HR to 40 because i couldn’t cancel it )
i should probably stop at this point and wait for the foam to actually arrive and see what it feels like as what i have already ordered is pretty much a whole mattress !
the snugfleece-like wool pad i have from my grandma is in a duvet type cover - and just now i realized that it is folded inside ! i took it out and unfolded it and it is actually queen size !
in their infinite wisdom my elders took a queen size wool pad folded it along the edges and put it into a smaller cover ! because they already had a small cover so naturally it was beyond them to go to bed bath & beyond and get a bigger cover for it - they just folded it up and stuck it into a small one.
so as it turns out i already have the snugfleece IN CORRECT SIZE !
i requested cancellation with Amazon but it may already be too late - the status says “shipping now” …
these people ( my elders ) … are impossible to deal with … they never use logic with anything they do … you can never predict how they are going to ruin everything - they always manage to do it, and they always do it in ways you could have never possibly thought about !
then today i weighed my snugfleece-alike pad without the cover and it was only 3.5 pounds and due to its design i estimated it only has 2.5 pounds of wool in it …
so i went ahead and ordered snugfleece elite again LOL
i also ordered 3" of 50 ILD HD and 2" of 36 ILD Talalay today !
so i received the 36 ILD talalay today - it feels pretty good.
so, the updated stats are:
1.5" wool ( SnugFleece Elite ) // DreamSoft Bedware via Amazon // should be getting on friday
2" 19 ILD blended Talalay // Brooklyn Bedding // received
3" 24 ILD Talalay GL Slow // arizona premium mattress // should be getting on monday
2" 36 ILD blended Talalay // Brooklyn Bedding // received today 3" 50 ILD HD polyurethane foam // foamexpress1.com // received
i have these 3 pieces of foam laying on top of a 8" cheap but firm spring mattress right now, so currently the test setup is:
2" 19 ILD blended Talalay // Brooklyn Bedding 3"
2" 36 ILD blended Talalay // Brooklyn Bedding
3" 50 ILD HD polyurethane foam // foamexpress1.com
8" old spring mattress // bought refurbished for $100 many years ago
and you know what ? it doesn’t feel too bad ! in fact it already feels better than PLB Nature and so far it uses only $600 worth of foam on top of $100 mattress
the 19 ILD which was bottoming hard is now doing much better because it is now on top of a more compliant surface …
of course to really understand what is going on i will need to wait for the 24 ILD piece to come on monday, and to take the spring base out of the equation.
0.0" sheets 100% Modal Jersey Knit // LinensNow via Amazon // received today
1.5" wool ( SnugFleece Elite ) // DreamSoft Bedware via Amazon // received today
2" 19 ILD blended Talalay // Brooklyn Bedding // received
3" 24 ILD Talalay GL Slow // arizona premium mattress // should be getting on monday
2" 36 ILD blended Talalay // Brooklyn Bedding // received
3" 50 ILD HD polyurethane foam // foamexpress1.com // received
god this SnugFleece threw a monkey wrench into the whole thing. it feels great BY ITSELF however it obliterates the feeling of the layers below it due to the extremely substantial polyester backing it has.
where previously i was falling through the 19 ILD talalay now i am laying on top of it - i will have to figure out something about this - i don’t really want to lay on top of the bed - i want to be IN the bed Tempurpedic style !
the modal jersey sheets are very nice ! they have a certain pornographic feel to them - soft, silky and semi-transparent - i guess this kind of fabric is called sheer - not really what i expected, but it’s pretty cool
