Wow, Where to start. Luckily I found this place through Reddit before blindly trusting Costco but the more I read the more questions I have.
The Basics: Looking for a King mattress for sub $2k or around there for myself and my wife.
Me: 5’8" 190lbs ~29BMI. Muscular build with large drop from chest/shoulders to waist. Mostly stomach sleeper until recent shoulder pain has had me more combination. More on that later.
Wife: 5’'5" 150lbs ~25 BMI. Muscular build as well. Mostly Side sleeper but moves around a bit. She sleeps hot and regularly wakes up sweating.
Background: Moved into a house a few years back but kept the old Queen bed frame. Got a temporary Zinus hybrid mattress to hold us over until we upgraded to king (That looks dumb now). Appears that the foam layer has really broken down and my pressure points are all getting destroyed by the inner spring. Didn’t realize what was happening until I started researching a King mattress upgrade and learned about recommended layer sizing, material breakdown, etc… but it all makes sense now.
My week+ of research so far has me narrowed down to a Medium firmness Latex/Innerspring Hybrid with at least 3" of comfort layering. Though I have been giving more thought to a full Latex option thanks to the forums. After searching through TMU’s trusted member directory my best options appear to be;
-Sleep EZ Hybrid or 360 Pillowtop Hybrid
-Luma Natural Latex Hybrid
-Next Owl Natural Latex Hybrid
Interestingly enough after I had all three selected I found a recent forum post from a mod suggesting these three.
Obviously everyone is different so you cant really recommend one over the other for me but now that I’m to this stage I wanted to make sure I was on the right track for my wife and I’s body type and sleep positions. It’s very hard to know if I should be adding on additional layers or which latex I should get. Beyond the comfort of the bed itself I’m also taking into account the durability, delivery times, haul away and return process. Now that we have somewhat of an Idea we plan to visit a showroom and do a little testing (once our street gets plowed)
Please let me know if you have any insight that might sway me towards one brand over the other, or what questions I should be calling in and asking. I’d also be open to suggestions on potentially more applicable beds that I may have missed.
Thank you in advance for any help or advice.

Hi Kmoney911.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum.
It looks like you’ve done ample research and have narrowed down your options to great, great, and great! Sorry to hear of your previous pain on the mattress from material breakdown.
With combination sleeping it is usually wise to choose a comfort layer that is a little thinner than your “deepest” sleeping position would normally require. Here’s where things get a little tricky. Stomach sleeping is the least common position and has the flattest sleeping profile of all the positions. Stomach sleepers have fewer gaps to fill in and need a thinner, firmer top comfort layer than the other positions. It is especially important for a stomach sleeper to avoid hyperextension of the lumbar area. In general, stomach sleepers should choose the thinnest, firmest comfort layers that are comfortable as sinking in too far can lead to a swayback position and cause back issues.
Some of this is information you won’t have until you’ve slept a while (through the break in period) on your new mattress. As for which latex, talalay and dunlop are often compared to angel food cake vs. pound cake. Talalay is airy and bouncy where dunlop is dense. You’ll frequently find talalay as a comfort layer, followed by dunlop in the core.
I think the most important thing to bring up with each of them is the shoulder pain and your unique body type. It sounds very much like your challenge when/if side sleeping is finding adequate sinking and support for your broad shoulders without losing support in your narrower waist.
I also look forward to hearing how in person testing goes!

Thank you for your response Nikki.
After deliberating this weekend I just went ahead and ordered the Luma Natural Latex hybrid with in medium firm with 3" talalay top. Maybe not too smart to skip in person but I feel fairly comfortable that worst case scenario I have a free comfort layer swap if we need to hone it in. I doubt that will happen as it appears to be everything we were looking for. It seemed to be the best fit and value and would allow us to sink into the mattress with adequate support and breathability. I talked to Luma to confirm my thoughts and they had the same recommendation.
It will also help keep me from stomach sleeping which is something I have been trying to move away from due to it’s issues with lower lumbar and shoulders, which I think this lower quality mattress has accelerated. I really appreciated the posts here from you and Phoenix which helped me make an informed choice. I also took your recommendation on mattress protector in an older post.
