latex hybrid: not sleeping deeply, adjustment period required?

I am currently sleeping on a DIY of 8 inch bolsa coils plus 3 inches of talalay latex. The mattress feels great: it’s simultaneously soft and supportive. I am not having any pain or discomfort, I feel perfectly aligned, and I am not getting pressure points during the night or waking up with numbness. However, I am not waking up refreshed. I don’t feel like I am getting deep sleep, and also occasionally waking up in the middle of the night (though not staying awake… I fall back asleep again within a few minutes, unlike firmer mattresses I’ve tried where I am up at 3 am and can’t fall back asleep). I’m wondering if others who have slept on latex hybrid or all latex mattresses required an adjustment period to get used to the different feel and performance of latex? And if you started off poorly, did your sleep improve over time?

I was sleeping deeper on a mattresses with memory foam in the comfort layer, but it presented different kinds of problems (sinking too deeply, unable to back sleep on it, etc.)

I would love to hear about people’s experiences with sleeping on latex hybrids or all latex mattresses for the first time. Thanks!

Hi najc33.

Sorry to hear that while comfortable, you’re not getting the deep sleep you need to feel refreshed. A break-in period is relatively common for a new mattress - about 90 nights is the average break-in. I do hope others with similar experience are able to weigh in.

I wonder if you are moving more on your new mattress, causing you to wake up?

Hi Nikki! Nice to interact with you again.

I think you must be right that I am moving more on the diy hybrid mattress and thus waking up more. There is no pain or pressure points, no heat, etc. I’ve been reading others who have said that the ‘pushback’ of latex can cause them to tense up rather than relax , their body was “fighting” the push in order to settle in, so maybe there’s something like that going on too.

For now, I’ve switched back to my somewhat lumpy but mostly comfortable all foam mattress and I’m sleeping well. If I have a few weeks in the future where I can give the latex hybrid a true trial period, I’ll certainly do so. But for now, due to certain life circumstances, waking not-refreshed and feeling anxious is just not a good idea.

Hi again!

It helps some people to remove the sheets/protectors on their mattress and try laying on it that way to see if you’re getting a less-tense experience. If so, then you know what to adjust.

Just a thought to leave here
