I should probably do some searching but I go impatient. I live in Canada (Ontario) and am looking to replace a king Natura Celebrity latex mattress purchased in 2007. Latex mattresses weren’t all that popular back then (at least in Canada) and specs were scarce. This one is 8", apparently with a 6" base of 35 ILD and the top 2" being between 26-32. It was firm so we got a 2" latex topper (not sure of ILD) at a Natura going out of business sale which leads in to my question.
Does anyone know latex bed suppliers in Canada? I have found 2 but one, Foamite, has a 3" latex top, 2" Koosh memory foam middle and a 3" latex bottom. Not sure about hybrid. The other I found is Nature’s Embrace who make their mattresses out of a combination of 2 " latex slabs with various ILD’s. Both places use all natural latex, no synthetics. SImilar price (hybrid is a bit more?). Any thoughts on hybrid vs non-hybrid?
If I don’t find other manufacturers, these are my options. Don’t want to ship from USA. Don’t really want the mattress in a box. Don’t want the normal brand names. Want all natural latex.
Over 70 and the thought of removing the old mattress and putting a new one in is concerning as they are very heavy.
I have purchased from Foamite many times, especially for work purposes, and the quality of their foam products is excellent. They have great service too. However, I don’t know much about their latex. They’re in Vaughan and you can just stop by should you happen to be nearby. The only negative is that they are on the expensive side, but you are getting quality and service.
One trusted TMU member in Canada that has natural latex available is Memory Foam Comfort. They are in BC and their prices include shipping within Canada. I have not purchased from them, so I have no first-hand experience with their quality or service. They are, though, a trusted member and they came up on our radar during our search.
I know you had mentioned that shipping from the US is not desirable, but if you happen to have friends or family in the US who can drive over, or know someone living in Canada but has US citizenship or residency, it may be worth asking if they would be willing to bring latex over for you. Prices in the US are significantly compared to those here. There are also many vendors from which to choose. That’s what we did for the latex we used in our recent build. If it weren’t for the current border restrictions southbound, we would have gone there and gotten it ourselves.
There’s a third option if you live in Canada and that is to use a customs broker to pull stuff across the border for you (no need to cross at all or have US friends/family). They had to develop these work arounds after the governments shut down the freedom of movement back in 2020. This works best if you have the ability to drive to the border but still can’t get across due to Covid restrictions. If you use www.kinek.com for your mailbox on the US side, many of them started working with customs brokers to help get the packages across (since essential workers were never restricted right from the beginning of the pandemic). I would call around on the US side and see which mailbox locations have options that work for you. In my situation I don’t ever have to worry if I can cross the border again to still receive US packages. Now they receive all my stuff at a mailbox on the US side, then when I decide I’ve got enough, I ask them to import it across for me (using the broker) and then I drive down to meet them on the Canadian side at a set time and place. Later I get an emailed receipt for any charges involved in bringing the items across (they charge a flat rate of $75 and then it’s like $4 per invoice, plus tax and duty you would have paid anyway if you picked it up yourself) It’s a bit more expensive than when I used to drive down and do it myself but nowhere near the difference in price/shipping you pay when shipping directly to Canada (plus some places just won’t even ship to Canada at all). Anyway I thought this might help as a work around for anyone stuck in a similar position.
