I notice some companies sell the base latex layer in a thick, 6" slab while others only use 3" layers. Is there any difference? I know in construction the engineered boards (smaller pieces stuck together) are stronger than a single, fat board. But in latex I have no idea.
Engineered boards are laminated, and the glues used to perform the lamination are stronger than the wood itself. These glues can also be waterproof, the individual pieces can have the grain oriented to enhance rigidity, etc. I don’t see many parallels to latex mattresses where you’ve got two independent unglued layers of rubber on top of each other. I think Plush Beds tries to convince you that the 6" Dunlop core is more durable than other alternatives… and that might be technically true. But what’s the likelihood of damaging any latex that is inside any high quality mattress cover with normal use? To me… minimal to zero likelihood.
