Latex Mattress - Mendocino From Custom Comfort Mattress

I am currently seeking to replace my current bed which is a latex hybrid (high density foam is the core “wear” layer and latex is the comfort layer.

I have decided to go with a Latex Bed as I like the feel of my current bed as well as its durability.

I think I am going to go with the Mendocino Mattress from Custom Comfort which is a local small chain in Southern California with its own factory.

I know that it is not the least expensive option but I like buying in a local store with good service. The store itself as well as the mattresses seem to be well reviewed.

Here are the specifications - I checked and they use Dunlop

At the moment I wouldn’t be getting one of their toppers but I would have the option to get one if I wanted to adjust the feel of the bed.

The bed is fully reversible and so the various layers just repeat themselves after the “core” layer

Any further questions I should be asking?

There is a very similar model - the Napa and the difference is that Layer 2 is "Exquisite Quilting (not wool) and Layer 3 is natural wool. The sales person said that Mendocino with two layers of wool had perfect temperature and moisture absorption.

Here are the layers for the Mendocino and the layers are repeated after the core so that the mattress can be flipped periodically.

Thanks for your prompt and thoughtful response.

As I wrote, that it is a local company is worth my paying a premium price as I know it isn’t the cheapest option

Regarding your points

I did confirm that all layers are Dunlop and from their own source where the trees grow and they evidently control the process to make sure it is all “organic”

I did ask about the difference between the two wool layers in the Mendocino and the quilting and one layer in the Napa and the person said that the two layers of wool would provide slightly better temperature and moisture control. Since I sleep “warm” I like the idea of better temperature control.

ETA - I think I did ask the salesperson about how two wool layers as opposed to one wool layer and a quilted layer impacted the feel of the comfort layer and I think he said it would make it feel slightly softer but not significantly. My current construction is wool over latex as the comfort layer but probably only one layer of wool. When I bought my current mattress I knew something about construction but didn’t think to ask that.

ETA - I did read about the ILD but got way confused about how it would actually impact the feel or longevity - my brain fogged over in a way similar to when I asked a nuclear physicist about his current project.

I asked about flipping and he then asked about my sleeping habits. He said based on it being principally slept on by me that once a year would be fine. He did say they offered a bed flipping service for a nominal charge since the latex beds are so heavy but I live in a full service building with maintenance guys who are happy to help me with this kind of stuff because I tip generously when they help me.

I am probably not the princess to feel the hidden pea :rofl: but this is their guarantee. I am not sure how this kind of adjustment would work so I am not relying on it too much - and in the meantime do you get a cheap loaner mattress while your actual mattress is adjusted.

I suspect that they would suggest one of their toppers and perhaps send over an assortment to test.

I can clarify with them when I speak to them. I am not in a super rush to get a new mattress as my current mattress is fine but I like to research ahead so that I don’t feel forced to buy something in a panic.
