Latex mattress on an Adjustable Foundation

 My wife and I are looking for a new mattress, bought a Beautyrest firm pillowtop 2 years ago from a large chain here in California that has turned into the worst mattress I have ever owned. I will not make that mistake again! We tried latex and like the support and feel. We are thinking about split cal king’s with adjustable foundations. She is a side sleeper and I on my back, so I"ve been looking online at companies that will make a mattress can be customized for each side firmness levels. I have neck and lower back issues and currenty sleep with two pilows under my legs to take stress of my lumbar. my thinking is I can adjust the bed and not use pillows. All this will sit on top of a 13" platform (oak with drawers) that was originally built to hold a waterbed it’s very sturdy. My [b]questions: Will these latex mattresses that have separate 3" layers breakdown from the movement of an adjustable foundation and will they shift around inside the cover? Most of the adjustable foundations are 8"-9" high, so I was thinking of a mattress no more that 9" high (2) 3" layers a 2" layer and 1" cover that would make the total height 31". Also how well does a single top sheet and blanket work on adjustable beds when one is flat the the other rised at the at both ends? Is there any way to cover the adjustable base so you don’t see the white side panels, seems like the would get dirty looking after a couple of years. Or could I better off a little thicker mattress with a zoned layer that I can adjust to suit my lower back and skip the adjustable base?

Hi DaveW,

No more so than any other mattress that used the same materials.

Generally no. Latex is “sticky” and layers don’t tend to slide over each other, especially inside a tight cover. If for some reason they did shift over time then it’s an easy matter to unzip the cover and wave them back into position again but it’s not something you would need to do on a regular basis.

If you have each side positioned differently with two twin mattresses then it would probably depend on the position of the bed and on how each of you slept and how much one of you tended to pull on the top sheet and blankets over the course of the night. It would increase the chances of the sheet and blankets shifting but your own experience will really be the only way to know if it would work for you. For some couples it wouldn’t work too well (some have issues with one person pulling blankets even with a single mattress that is flat) and for some it would be fine.

You could use a bed skirt like one of these that goes over the adjustable and hangs down to the floor. Some adjustables also don’t have the deep side panels and have different fabric choices (see here) and also have a matching bed skirt available (see here).

There are too many variables, unknowns, and preferences to answer this based on any “theory at a distance” and the only way to know this would be based on your own personal testing and/or experience on the mattress or mattress / adjustable combination so you could compare them in person.
