Hello Phoenix & all, I am hoping somebody can help me out. I have read up a lot and am utterly confused.
Our toddler is moving from a crib into a twin bed. We have two 3" layers of latex that we would like to use to make his mattress (which would end up being 6" thick). This leaves us with two issues:
- What casing to purchase to snugly cover the two 3" layers of latex.
- What to put on top of the mattress to provide some level of water resistance and washability, since our son will be potty training and will certainly have accidents during the night.
He is a warm/hot sleeper and we want to avoid synthetics/waterproofing that will cause him to sweat even more than he already does.
On #1, I have had little luck finding a casing that is the right size (6") and that contains no synthetics. The closest I have managed is SleepEZ’s 4-way stretch non-quilted mattress cover replacement, but as far as I can tell it is a mix of cotton/synthetics. There is also SleepEZ’s natural cotton cover quilted to wool, which is more expensive, but I’m not sure whether it makes sense to have the wool quilting on the mattress casing itself, when I am also going to be needing to purchase a protector over top of it.
On #2, I would prefer to stay away form the pure “waterproof” protector options, as I’m afraid they will cause him to sweat even more than he normally does. I looked at the St. Dormeir and Sleep & Beyond myProtector wool options, which I understand are “water resistant” and machine washable, but I’m not sure whether these will actually be water resistant enough to protect against a toddler’s night-time accidents.
Any guidance would be very, very appreciated!
