Latex Mattress Sagging

Is it typical for a latex mattress to form depressions where you sleep? We have a 9" from Arizona Premium Mattress Company. 6" medium core and a 3" soft comfort layer. WE had to move the 3" layer to the bottom because it was too soft after it broke in. We haven’t had it much longer than 6 months, but there are definite depressions on both of our sides where we sleep. I was under the impression latex wouldn’t do this?

Hi ejcrossl,

All foam materials will both soften (virtual impressions) and/or develop visible impressions to some degree over time and won’t stay perfectly flat but if they are higher quality and more durable materials such as latex they will be significantly less and take longer to develop than lower quality and less durable materials and any minimal softening or impressions won’t generally affect the comfort and support of the mattress. If there are natural fibers in the mattress quilting they will also develop slight impressions over time as well as they pack down under your weight over time.

Latex in general is the most durable of all the foam materials and generally holds up very well for a very long period of time but there are several possibilities that can account for your experience that are listed in post #4 here.

Softer materials are also less durable than firmer materials of the same type and it’s possible that your mattress was “on the edge” of being too soft for you and even a very slight amount of softening was enough to take you outside of the comfort/support range that is suitable for you.

It’s also possible that there is some sagging in the support system under your mattress which can certainly cause visible impressions.

You can check for any visible impressions in your latex layers by putting them (or the individual layers) on the floor and then either running a string from edge to edge or use a straight edge (such as a broom handle) across the layers and then measuring the depth of any visible impression from the bottom of the straight edge or from the string.

While it would be unusual … if either of your latex layers are defective and there are visible impressions that are deeper than they should be then I would certainly talk to them about a warranty claim.

I have had this happen just once before. In my customer’s case, the depressions were formed within a month. It was definitely a warranty claim. It would almost be termed under the “sudden softening” category which is usually reserved for large trapped air bubbles that suddenly give way. Also a very rare happening.

I really doubt I am experiencing such a rare case, which is why I have turned here instead of calling the factory.

Hi ehrossl,

Regardless of whether your experience is “rare” or “common” or something in between … the first step is to identify why you are experiencing what you are experiencing using the information in the previous replies. The first step in resolving any problem is to identify the underlying cause of the problem itself.

If your experience or any visible sagging in your mattress is the result of the latex in your mattress or an actual defect in the mattress then it would certainly be in the “uncommon” category and the best suggestion would be to contact the manufacturer to discuss the options that are available to you or to initiate a warranty claim. Dunlop and Talalay latex are the oldest foam materials that are used in the industry and both of them have a very long history over many decades of being one of the most durable mattress materials.

Did you measure the depth of any visible impressions in your latex layers?

Posting on the forum here can certainly help you identify the underlying reasons that may be causing the issues you are having and in some cases can help you resolve them if they aren’t connected with a defect in the mattress itself or with the firmness choice you made … but if there is an actual defect in your mattress then the only way to resolve it would be by talking with the manufacturer of your mattress.

Great plan of Action, thank you Phoenix. I will pull the layers out this weekend and take a look.
