Hi Everyone,
I have learned so much from this site since I started lurking a couple of months ago. It is refreshing to find this type of curated material that finally informed me about what was going on right underneath my nose (and body- both figuratively and literally) all these years. And why I was almost immediately uncomfortable after our last few mattress purchases, which seemed to happen more and more frequently. Thank you!
I decided to stop lurking and post in case my research/experience answers someone elseâs questions.
Reading this site, I realized that I did not want to sleep on any kind of polyurethane foam ever again- I already knew that I did not like memory foam. I had initially resisted the idea of going all latex because, in my ignorance, it seemed ânot like a real bedâ without the innerspring. So I found on this site the retailers in my area who sold all-latex and/or latex-hybrid innerspring mattresses and visited a few of them. I quickly found that I really liked the all latex feel- I didnât need an innerspring, and in fact I preferred all latex even though it was more expensive than the hybrid.
The first 4 retailers only sold Dunlop latex, and the fifth was Essentia which sells some kind of proprietary latex that I am not exactly sure what it is. Esssentia was definitely not preferable for me, and far more expensive, so I ruled them out.
About us- my husbandâs BMI is 24. My BMI is 23. I like a firm mattress, but I need a little give because I have neck issues. He likes a really firm mattress. Over the years, we have always compromised- mostly our mattresses ended up being a little softer than he really likes it, and about how I like it. Hmmm, maybe that is not a compromise.
Next was finding a Talalay mattress to compare. Luckily, we found a retailer who sold both types. They were wonderful- helpful, straightforward, and provided us with lots of information about the foams and the ILDs. We tried out Latex International, Posh and Lavish, and Savvy Rest. Once I lay down on the Posh & Lavish, which has two Talalay comfort layers on top of a 5" core of Dunlop latex (firm, not sure what ILD), I found heaven. The retailer was very helpful and provided us with a lot of the information that is completely lacking from the Posh & Lavish site. We probably would have bought the mattress if only Posh & Lavish didnât glue all their layers together. I wanted the flexibility to swap out layers, and also give my husband the firmer side that he prefers. Savvy Rest does not glue the layers together, was about the same price, can split sides, and used slightly different Radium foam. But, Savvy Restâs soft Talalay was a lot softer than the soft Talalay International on top of the Posh and Lavish. We really hate having a very, very soft top layer. And their medium Talalay is firmer- hubby happy, but not me. Also, we both were not crazy about the Savvy Rest cover, it felt a bit stiff, although I donât think that would matter once you put a mattress pad on top of it. Plusses for Savvy Rest that the cover was all organic.
I decided to investigate the higher quality on-line vendors who used Talalay foam from Radium. Foam Sweet Foam popped up in my searches, and their website was extremely informative and up-front about each of their components. It seems like the softness of the Talalay comfort layer in medium is about what we want. They have an excellent reputation, and a decent return policy. So after speaking with Scott and Heidi, I placed an order.
Wish me luck. I am worried now about the mattress cover and the Urban Green mattress pad since we are a bit picky there. When it arrives later this week, Iâll post my impressions.
