Latex mattress search- combo Talalay and Dunlop

Hi Everyone,
I have learned so much from this site since I started lurking a couple of months ago. It is refreshing to find this type of curated material that finally informed me about what was going on right underneath my nose (and body- both figuratively and literally) all these years. And why I was almost immediately uncomfortable after our last few mattress purchases, which seemed to happen more and more frequently. Thank you!

I decided to stop lurking and post in case my research/experience answers someone else’s questions.

Reading this site, I realized that I did not want to sleep on any kind of polyurethane foam ever again- I already knew that I did not like memory foam. I had initially resisted the idea of going all latex because, in my ignorance, it seemed ‘not like a real bed’ without the innerspring. So I found on this site the retailers in my area who sold all-latex and/or latex-hybrid innerspring mattresses and visited a few of them. I quickly found that I really liked the all latex feel- I didn’t need an innerspring, and in fact I preferred all latex even though it was more expensive than the hybrid.

The first 4 retailers only sold Dunlop latex, and the fifth was Essentia which sells some kind of proprietary latex that I am not exactly sure what it is. Esssentia was definitely not preferable for me, and far more expensive, so I ruled them out.

About us- my husband’s BMI is 24. My BMI is 23. I like a firm mattress, but I need a little give because I have neck issues. He likes a really firm mattress. Over the years, we have always compromised- mostly our mattresses ended up being a little softer than he really likes it, and about how I like it. Hmmm, maybe that is not a compromise.

Next was finding a Talalay mattress to compare. Luckily, we found a retailer who sold both types. They were wonderful- helpful, straightforward, and provided us with lots of information about the foams and the ILDs. We tried out Latex International, Posh and Lavish, and Savvy Rest. Once I lay down on the Posh & Lavish, which has two Talalay comfort layers on top of a 5" core of Dunlop latex (firm, not sure what ILD), I found heaven. The retailer was very helpful and provided us with a lot of the information that is completely lacking from the Posh & Lavish site. We probably would have bought the mattress if only Posh & Lavish didn’t glue all their layers together. I wanted the flexibility to swap out layers, and also give my husband the firmer side that he prefers. Savvy Rest does not glue the layers together, was about the same price, can split sides, and used slightly different Radium foam. But, Savvy Rest’s soft Talalay was a lot softer than the soft Talalay International on top of the Posh and Lavish. We really hate having a very, very soft top layer. And their medium Talalay is firmer- hubby happy, but not me. Also, we both were not crazy about the Savvy Rest cover, it felt a bit stiff, although I don’t think that would matter once you put a mattress pad on top of it. Plusses for Savvy Rest that the cover was all organic.

I decided to investigate the higher quality on-line vendors who used Talalay foam from Radium. Foam Sweet Foam popped up in my searches, and their website was extremely informative and up-front about each of their components. It seems like the softness of the Talalay comfort layer in medium is about what we want. They have an excellent reputation, and a decent return policy. So after speaking with Scott and Heidi, I placed an order.

Wish me luck. I am worried now about the mattress cover and the Urban Green mattress pad since we are a bit picky there. When it arrives later this week, I’ll post my impressions.

Hi Atari,

Welcome to the Mattress Forum!

Thank you for the kind words.

And thank you for taking the time to detail your mattress shopping experience – I appreciate it. And congratulations on the new mattress you ordered! :cheer: As I think you’re already aware, you ordered something using high quality materials, and I do think highly of Foam Sweet Foam (they are site members here).

I’m looking forward to your future updates once you’ve had a chance to sleep upon your new mattress for a while.

Thanks Phoenix for moderating this site.

I have to say, I really wanted to buy from this particular local retailer. They were incredibly helpful and honest. Also, I know that they go to bat for their customers if there are any warranty issues. If they had had what I wanted/needed, I would have been willing to pay about 20% more to buy locally rather than online.

Hi atari,

You’re most welcome. Thank you for using the information here to search for a new mattress!

One of the advantages of trying mattresses locally is that you can try many different types and styles and combinations of materials and components and firmness levels and compare them to each other in “real time” (as you did with the different latex options) based on your actual experience rather than just “theory” instead of trying one online mattress at a time and not knowing how it compares to the other mattresses that you could have tried or purchased instead. Because there can be more uncertainty and risk with an online purchase and because the personal attention that is available locally is certainly worth a reasonable premium … if the price difference between a local choice and an online choice of a similar mattress is in the range of 20% or so I would treat them as roughly equal value because of the “value” of some of the benefits that can come from dealing with a local business. Unfortunately, in this case what your local retailer offered was not what you desired in construction.

The Foam Sweet Foam mattress components have arrived, so I thought I would update about the items that worried me buying sight unseen over the internet.

First, putting it together. This was a work-out! We got the King sized 4 layer (total 12" of latex) mattress. I could only carry the boxes that had the pad and cover, and the Medium Talalay top. My husband had to carry the other three layers. We put it together, and while it was relatively easy, it was a workout. Note- if the head of your bed is up against the wall, it is difficult to zip that side. And the mattress is heavy, so it is hard to move the bed. Maybe 4 layers was overkill.

The mattress cover was a delightful surprise. It has a knit cotton top over the batted wool, so it bounces with the mattress. Also, it had no bad smell at all. In fact, it is one of the nicest mattress covers we have seen. Similarly, the Urban Green mattress pad is very nice. It has an Egyptian cotton sateen (not a knit material, but more like a high quality sheet) top surface over the batted wool, and then very stretchy mesh sides. When I took it out of it’s packaging, there was also no smell. It is oversized and designed to shrink, so I washed it on cold as recommended. Taking it out of the washer, it did smell like wet wool. Drying it on medium took a while, but once it dried it had only the faintest of smells like a wool sweater. I thought, this is just Lovely, Much Better than sleeping on petrochemical foam.

The bed feels nice, and noticeably just a bit firmer on my husband’s side. We will sleep on it a few days and I will report back again.

Hi atari,

Thank you for the update! I’m glad that everything arrived in good shape and you were able to assemble your new mattress and everything passed your “sniff test”. I’ll be interested in learning about your mattress once you’ve had a chance to sleep upon it for a while longer.

I promised to update after sleeping on our new FSF mattress a few days. It’s actually been a few weeks.

Bottom line- it’s a keeper.

Husband is very happy with the firmness of his side, and doesn’t want to change a thing.

I am pretty happy with my side. In fact, I love going to bed, and actually now sometimes sleep on my back which I could never do on our previous Beautyrest Black. On this FSF bed, when I lie on my back (without a pillow), my body is in perfect neutral position and it feels like I am on a cloud. However, I am considering swapping out the second layer down from a Medium Dunlop to a Medium Talalay because when I sleep on my side it does feel pretty firm. Don’t get me wrong, this is the best bed that I have ever slept on, so I am not sure whether I am going to do any further tweaking or not. I have a couple of more months to think about it with their 90 day swap-out-a-layer policy.

Also, after almost a month, there does not seem to be any discernible compression of the foam from our bodyweight. After almost a month on our old Beautyrest, there were already bodyweight impressions on the top. So I think this new mattress is going to have much better longevity.

Any questions, feel free to ask away.

Hi atari,

Thank you for the update. I’m glad that you’re both enjoying your new FSF mattress. I agree with you to give it a bit more time on your side before deciding whether or not to make a layer change.

I’m looking forward to future updates!

Hi Everyone,

After sleeping on my FSF mattress for a bit over a year, I can report that this is the best mattress I have ever owned. I never did switch out the layers, and I am glad. Every night when I go to bed, I literally fall asleep in minutes. I thought it was my imagination, but my fitbit confirms it. My neck is feeling better (I have compressions in C5 and C6), and I wake up absolutely refreshed.

There is just about zero indentation in the spots where we sleep, so I think it will be many years before we have to replace the top layer. However, the Urban Green mattress cover sheds a lot each time we wash it (every month or two); I expect that we will need to replace that after a few years.

I can’t imagine buying a bed from anywhere else (unless the foam is the exact same quality). I even suggested to my husband that we replace our college student’s Full size bed with a FSF mattress, and he put his foot down because “we don’t want him moving back home after college, we want him to strike out on his own!” So we will make a new mattress a house warming gift for him.

Happy shopping and sleeping everyone!

Hi Atari.

Thank you for keeping your promise and for taking the time to share a one-year mattress update, comments, and feedback. I am very appreciative when our consumer members return to post their experiences for the benefit of others. I am glad that you are enjoying your mattress, but most of all I am glad to hear that your neck is better… you must have found the “Sweet” spot with “Foam Sweet Foam”. I am not sure if you noticed but we invited FSF to be on our panel of Expert Members here and you can pay them a virtual visit at any time. They take a great deal of pride in their products and the way they treat their customers and I am sure they’ll appreciate your heartfelt comments. You can also reach out to see if they can send you a replacement cover when the one you have wears out.

 I concur that buying a good and inviting mattress may send mixed messages and is definitely not the way to kick anyone out of the nest when the time comes… far better in this instance to use the carrot and stick approach to get him to “strike out on his own”… then after he is settled on his own you can use the same approach to come and pay you visit

Once more congratulations on a job/research well done and your success and I’m looking forward to any additional updates you may have.
