Latex mattress thickness with adjustable bases

Hi Phoenix,
I’ve been researching mattresses and adjustable bases for a split E-King (or 2 XL Twins) for several weeks now, and I really appreciate the wealth of information provided on your site! My wife and I are average weight/height “seniors” with the usual aches and pains. We’re replacing a 30+ year old innerspring mattress with a 2" memory foam topper that can get pretty hot during the night. It doesn’t have much “give” once you get past the foam layer.
We both prefer a “plush” feel to our mattresses, but also appreciate the need to be adequately supported. After checking many of the manufacturers recommended on your site, we are leaning toward the SleepEZ Natural Select Sleep Mattress and the Leggett & Platt S-Cape 2.0 Furniture Style bases.
We like the 13" mattress with these layers: 3" Soft Talalay; 3" Medium Talalay; 3" Medium Dunlop; 3" Firm Dunlop. We could increase the firmness of the two Dunlop layers to Firm and X-Firm.

Now here are my questions: (1) Do you think the 13" mattresses will work well on the adjustable bases? We want to be sure the mattress will flex adequately to work with the adjustable base. (2) Would a 10" mattress work better and provide equivalent support? That would probably be something like 3" Soft Talalay; 3" Medium Talalay; 3" Firm Dunlop. (3) Overall, what do you think of our mattress choices?
Thanks for all the good information on your site, and I’ll be interested to know what you and any of your interested members think!

Hi nboltz,

Welcome to the Mattress Forum!

Yes, you should have no issues with this 13" thick mattress flexing upon a power foundation. I usually recommend a maximum mattress thickness of about “a foot or so” for use with an adjustable bed base, but that can also change with the type of material being used (latex being more flexible than a “bendable” innerspring mattress).

All of the layers of a mattress work together, so deleting/changing one layer will impact the overall feel/support characteristics of that mattress. The 10" combination you mentioned is quite popular and it would normally be adequate for use for someone of “average weight/height”.

You’re certainly considering a mattress using high-quality and durable materials, so good work there. As far as comfort choices, that’s something that I would suggest you discuss in a detailed phone conversation with SleepEZ directly. They can inquire in more detail about your somatotype, weight/height, sleeping styles, physical ailments, specific preferences and any other concerns/needs that you may have. They’ll have your best interests at heart and can help “talk you through” the specifics of their mattresses and the properties/“feels” and the options they have available that may be the best “match” for you based on the information you provide them, any local testing you have done or mattresses you have slept on and liked, or other mattresses you are considering that they are familiar with, and the “averages” of other customers that are similar to you. They will know more about “matching” their specific mattress designs, options, and firmness levels to different body types, sleeping positions, and preferences (or to other mattresses that they are familiar with) than anyone else. Also, at that time you can inquire about the SleepEZ options for layer exchanges / product return, as that is an important part of any online purchase. As you’re already aware, SleepEZ is a member of this site which means that I think very highly of them and that I believe that they compete well with the best in the industry in terms of their quality, value, service, knowledge, and transparency. They are extremely knowledgeable about latex and different configurations.

The configurations you’ve listed are common for those desiring some surface plushness but good support. The 13" model will allow for more customization, but sometimes people in a more “average weight/height” range don’t need this many layers, nor desire the ability for more customization, as this sometimes can lead to more confusion in overall possibilities. This is another case where a conversation with SleepEZ will be quite beneficial.

I’ll be interested in learning about any future items you’re considering, or the results of any talks you have with SleepEZ, and of course any other questions that I may be able to answer for you.

After doing a lot more research online, we decided to go with the SleepEZ Natural Select Sleep Latex Mattress in the 13" height. We considered the 10" height, but it appears the thicker height works well with the adjustable bases, and it gives us more options.
I talked with Shaun, and he recommended the following configurations, top to bottom: (Wife’s Side) Soft Talalay / Medium Talalay / Medium Dunlop / Firm Dunlop; (My Side) Soft Talalay / Medium Talalay / Firm Dunlop / X-Firm Dunlop. We both love a soft feel to the comfort layer, so this provides some flexibility. If it’s too soft, we can swap the upper layers around. And they do offer an exchange if one of the layers doesn’t work out.
We went with the blended Talalay because it is more durable and less expensive, and “all-natural” is not a big priority for us. The mattress prices include free delivery, but we get to assemble them. From the looks of the videos, that should not be difficult - maybe even fun!
For the adjustable bases, we considered some of the higher end Leggett and Platt models, but they seem to be overpriced, a criticism I’ve noted on this site and others. In the end we bought a couple of Reverie 9T Twin XL bases because they have a lot of features for the money. The purchase price includes free white glove delivery - a big bonus!
Shaun did a great job walking us through the entire process and giving us options on the mattresses. He wasn’t in a hurry and encouraged me to call if I had any other questions. I really appreciated his very frank, honest manner, and there was absolutely no pressure from him. Very refreshing!
The mattresses can be here in 3-4 days, but the adjustable bases take about three weeks. We have arranged to contact Shaun when we are contacted by the white glove delivery company to set up the bases. With a bit of luck, everything will arrive about the same time!
I went online and saw that Salvation Army will pick up used mattresses, so we will contact them to make sure they can do that. If that doesn’t work, we’ll use a mattress disposal service. The cost in Austin, TX is currently $95 for a complete mattress set - very reasonable.
At this point it looks like we’re getting a tremendous value for about half what we would pay at a comparable “big name” retail outlet store. And that 5 percent TMU discount on the mattresses was a nice bonus! We’ll let you know how it goes…

Hi nboltz,

Thank you for the update, and congratulations on your new mattress purchase! :cheer: You did make a choice using high quality materials.

Yes, you should be fine with this item on an adjustable bed base.

Assembly of component mattresses is quite simple, just lay things out and go in steps. Remember that you can tear latex, so handle it as you’re instructed and put a few “waves” through it to get the latex to go into place just where you want it, as opposed to dragging it.

It sounds as if you’re going to have a nice combination there.

I think very highly of Shawn and the advice he provides. I’m glad he was able to answer your questions and you had a positive interaction with him.

I’m looking forward to receiving some feedback on your new mattress and power foundations once you’ve received them and have had a chance to sleep on them for a while. And I’m glad you were able to use your Mattress Underground discount.

Hi nboltz. I am wondering how your mattresses and their adjustable bases are working out. We are considering the exact same purchase, both the mattresses and the bases. Is the 13" thickness working well with the adjustable base? We are concerned, as you were, about the ability of the 13" to conform to the base as compared to the 10". Is the feel of the mattresses as good as you thought it was going to be? Did you need to switch layers within the configuration or do a layer swap? I think highly of Sleep EZ and feel they would be a great company to work with. Thanks!

While I’m not nboltz, I have a 12" all latex mattress with a 3" latex topper and a 2" wool topper, and it all conforms just fine on a power foundation for me.

Thank you Jeff! Good to know
