Hi, I need an advice. I currently have 3" 19 ILD Talalay layer on top of 3" 30 ILD Dunlop and 3" 44 ILD Dunlop. I slept on it without a cover for few nights and felt very comfortable. My husband who weights more than me thinks the top is a little bit too soft for him.
Yesterday I put all layers in a cotton stretch cover which fits snugly. Now the mattress seems to be much firmer. My husband likes it but it’s too firm for me. It’s ok when I sleep on my back but I’m a side sleeper. I feel that my shoulder doesn’t sink far enough. I was tossing and turning all night.
You’ve only sampled your mattress with the new encasement for one night, so the first thing I would suggest would be to give this a few weeks to allow your cover to break-in a bit. I think that you’ll find it will lose some of its stiffness and hopefully it will “adjust to you” and you’ll “adjust to it”.
If after a few weeks you decide that you just can’t live with your mattress encasement, you could search for another that is even more conforming that the one you are currently using. There are some replacement covers that are not quilted and use blends of polyester/viscose/rayon/elastin and similar fibres that you may prefer. But before that, I would also evaluate your mattress pad and fitted sheet, as both of these items will influence your overall comfort, and see if there is anything in this area you might be able to fine tune before going out and purchasing an entirely new mattress encasement.
Hi Phoenix, Thanks for your reply. I will wait few more weeks for the adjustment.
I’m wondering if it’s still too firm, would it be softer if I remove the top layer from the cover and put it on top (probably find a loose topper cover for this layer)?
Technically, yes, this should result in a bit of a softer overall surface comfort, as the uppermost layer would now be in its own encasement and could move and contour a bit more freely than if it was in the complete mattress encasement. You’d want to make sure that whatever encasement you used for this “topper” piece was of course flexible, and you may wish to order a properly-size mattress encasement for the now thinner base mattress.
Thank you for your suggestion. Last night was miserable. I could not sleep at all. My shoulder could not sink into the mattress. It actually sits on top. (My hip weights more so it’s able to sink). I’m afraid it will create spinal misalignment if I keep sleeping like this. After two restless nights this morning I unzipped the cover and I felt asleep immediately.
I’m not sure how many sleepless nights I can withstand until the cover break-in. I probably give it few more days before buying a new cover.
A more flexible covering for the entire mattress or separating the topper with its own flexible covering will hopefully provide the point elasticity that you desire.
