Latex topper for 7" simmons foam mattress?

Hello! So firstly this forum is an amazing resource, I wouldnt have been able to DIY my home mattress without this site. My home mattress is 6" 36 ILD talalay, 3" 28 ILD talalay, 3" 21 ILD talalay which we’ve had for a few years and it’s doing great. My current work requirements mean I’m staying in a rented room 3-5 nights a week, and the provided mattress (a 7" simmons memory foam) is not doing me any favors. I’m 5’7", 200 lb, and a side sleeper with lower back pain. I’m going to be here for a year and a half so I need to improve the bedding situation, but I dont necessarily want to get a whole mattress because I’m not going to need it once my contract is over. I’d prefer to keep costs under $250 for a full-size bed. Basically it looks like I could get a 2" blended talalay ILD 19 from APM, a 3" dunlop ILD 20 from SoL, or a 2" zoned soft dunlop from Turmerry. I think my preference would be 3" talalay but I dont think that exists in this price range.

My concerns: Ive been having a lot of pain in my hips (I feel like the current mattress is both too firm and that Im sinking into it unpleasantly), so on that count I am thinking 3" is better than 2". But I dont know if I’ll like dunlop as much as the talalay I’m used to? What about egg crate/convoluted, is that worth looking into?

Anyway I welcome your advice! Thanks!

Hi Zembla.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum. It’s amazing to hear you were able to get the information you needed from our forum to create your DIY mattress!

:weary: They really didn’t try at all, did they? Is it all foam, or is it innerspring + memory foam?

This one (by DIY Mattress) is close. It’s a full size, soft Talalay for ~$300. But it’s 2".

Do you know how much foam is already in the comfort layer, by chance?

This depends. You’re not going to sink as completely into an egg crate topper simply due to its nature. That said, a cheap egg crate topper saved my life for like 4 years so I can’t say they do nothing. If you really like the way latex slabs feel, I’d just go with what you know.

Hi Nikki, thanks for the response! I believe the mattress is the 7" firm one shown here: Amazon.com

Just posting in case anyone else is in the same situation: I did end up getting the 3" soft dunlop from Sleep on Latex and I now love my bed! I don’t think I have a strong opinion on dunlop vs talalay, I was worried it would be too different but I think latex is just such a great mattress material regardless of the type.
