I’m thinking my mother might end up using this 3 inch topper I ordered, but she seems to think these 2 squares on the back with no holes are a bit firmer than the rest of the mattress, what are these areas for? And could one poke exact holes in that side to match the rest of the holes and “even it up”? There hols are all perfect and consistent on the top side.

That’s great news that your Mother may be using your unneeded topper rather than it ending up unused in a crowded landfill ! Regarding your topper, could you provide a few details? What size is your 3" topper? Who did you purchase it from and how old is it? The solid square areas could be a residual part of the manufacturing process but it would be helpful to know more about it before trying to answer your questions

Generally SO has good value organic latex components and good service post-sale. On their site, they explain in article titled “Normal Variations in Natural & Organic Latex”, which includes various image examples of possible cosmetic flaws that may result as part of the manufacturing process that usually have no impact on the latex’s durability or performance.
According to the article, sometimes the latex mold will have a few missing pins, resulting in the smooth, “pin-free” area that your topper has. This is a cosmetic issue and will not affect the functionality or breathability of your topper. There is no need to “even it up” by punching new holes as this could potentially damage the topper and would certainly void any remedy options you may have. Sleeping Organic offers a 30 Night Topper Exchange and if you find the areas of firmness are too uncomfortable, you may consider checking with them as to their suggestions. I guess we’ve decided to return it. The photo from their site shows a mattress with a spot with 5 missing holes. In my mattress, there are 2 areas, about 12 inches square each, and on one of them, I just counted… and there are a total of 124 holes in that area that are either missing, or barely there (depth of about 1/16 of an inch) while the rest of the pinholes on that side of mattress are of normal size, and a good 1 1/2 inches deep… and that changes the firmess in both of those areas of the mattress. All of those imperfections shown on the website is troubling to me, as latex mattresses our family bought back in the 60’s and 70’s (from the Sears catalog, no less) never had any imperfections at all. It just seems to me to be a website full of excuses for poor quality control. I ended up just purchasing a new 50 pound 5 inch poly mattress from Foam Factory, and it arrived in perfect condition and feels like my old one did when new. I guess I shouldn’t have tried to change. I guess it will end up being a 50$ lesson learned, unfortunately.
That all seems very strange to me to have “missing pins” because usually they are used to ensure the latex is cooked evenly in the mold. I have never seen any like that but I would definitely think it will change the feel to have large areas with no pin holes too (since both curing and density will be slightly different than the rest of the layer).
