Latex versus hybrid latex

Hello - we’ve had a Flobed for 19 years now and it’s time to replace it. We were happy with the Flobed, but it is no longer giving us the support it once did and both of us are getting some back pain. We are both side sleepers with weight in the 160s.

I assumed we would go with latex again, but I now see that hybrid coil/latex is an option. Can someone explain the pros and cons of all latex versus the hybrid of latex and coils?

The main thing I have picked up so far in searching the forums is that the hybrid with coils may allow for a cooler sleep.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi problemsolver.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Flobeds makes excellent products and it’s amazing you’ve been able to get 19 years out of your mattress. They are a Trusted Member of our site which means we think very highly of them and believe them to be among the best in the industry.

As you pointed out, one of the “pros” to a hybrid mattress is that the coils allow for a better airflow than an all foam configuration. Also, for those who enjoy the traditional bounce and feel of an innerspring mattress, a hybrid can be a great option.

Otherwise, it really comes down to preference. There aren’t really any “cons” to either option, it just depends on what you enjoy the feel of and what feels most supportive and comfortable to you.

We have and all latex bed and I recently did a DIY hybrid. While we like the all latex bed, but the hybrid is more pressure point relieving with our setup up. Not to say latex can’t relive pressure points, I personally just found all latex more difficult to “dial” in on the comfort side while its quite easy to dial in the support layer based on height/weight/etc.

For me the properties of latex firmness require higher differences in ILD to be able to dial it in like going from a 28-30ILD to something like 20ILD when stacking latex as I’m 5’10 250lbs. What I have found the more inches of latex I stack to achieve comfort the farther I get away from the support core which results in pressure relief on my shoulders but less core support resulting in lower back pain.

When I built our hybrid it was easier to adjust the latex even while using the 6" QEE Bolsa coils and it allow for “some” contouring at the support core level and that little bit of give in the coils allow for a better balance in both support and comfort. I think the native push back in latex and a all latex bed takes more adjusting in trying to balance the support and comfort depending on the firmness of the support core.

Again this is just my experience, ymmv when venturing out from what already works for you. In the end if you liked your Flobed and it worked out for you I would stick with that recipe as you dont want to get on that mattress merry go round as its hard to get off of it w/o some good time and money invested. Good Luck.

Thank you!
