I have a 4 layer latex mattress. From bottom up it’s extra firm, firm, firm, medium. I am a big guy and that was recommended. it’s a bit firm but is supportive. The issue is it gets very hot.
I have a 1 inch blended fiber quilted pad on top and it helps a little.
I am thinking of getting a microcoil topper and removing one of the firm layers. Does anybody have any experience or input?
Welcome to the community and thank you for your question.
One thing I can suggest is a wool topper. Wool tends to be very temperature neutral and does a great job managing moisture, which is often what actually makes you feel hot. That alone can make a noticeable difference.
As far as microcoils, yes, they can definitely help the mattress feel cooler. We have a Titan Plus Elite mattress in one of our guest rooms. Even though it has about 3.25 inches of foam in the cover panel and comfort layer, just below that is a roughly 0.75 inch microcoil layer. That microcoil section allows air to flow through the mattress rather than being trapped in foam, which helps reduce heat buildup. A microcoil topper would function in the same way by creating airflow and reducing heat retention, so it should feel cooler than adding another foam or latex layer.
Coincidentally, my Helix premium microcoil topper arrived today and I will be placing it on our mattress tomorrow. While we do not normally sleep hot, and I am currently using a 3 inch Talalay latex topper that replaced our 3 inch organic wool topper, I should be able to offer more personal feedback in the next few days on how the microcoil topper affects temperature.
So far, my wife’s favorite has been the wool topper. I have liked all of our toppers except for a 3 inch Tempur-Pedic viscoelastic topper, which definitely slept hot, swallowed us and made us feel stuck in the mattress. It is for questions like yours, I try the various toppers, and materials. For the coolest sleep, a horsehair topper, is the way to go, but that is a pricey proposition.
Thank you, it’s very helpful. I look forward to your feedback on the helix microcoil. It is exactly what I was looking at.
I had a Titan, but I don’t remember the exact model. For me it was way too firm. That is where I got my current blended topper. It’s helix btanded but doesn’t say what’s inside, just blended.
My concern with wool, is that I’m allergic and I don’t know if that will come through the sheets
The Titan Plus Elite is an awesome mattress, particularly for side sleepers. This one I can assure you will not feel too firm.
As far as the Helix Premium Microcoil topper. After one night so far it is great! Love it. Initially, it feels as firm as my 3" 38ILD Latex topper. The difference is the buoyant pushback.
The Helix is a bit more forgiving and you feel the topper conforming to the body, more naturally , with a softer, non sinking, but less pushback feel after 15-20 minutes on it.
While I would naturally expect that my latex topper to last longer, the helix topper in the luxury firm model does offer a very supportive, firm, but not hard feel, with better, through the night contouring.
I will keep you posted as time passes using the Helix.
I went with an egg crate high density foam. It is a definite improvement though it still sleeps warm to hot. It is above the mattress cover for better breathability. I also have it covered with a loose knit cotton blanket as it is also supposed to help with breathability.
I needed to remove the extra layer of latex to reduce the height of the bed. This was a extra firm outside the matress casing.
