Hi,
I’m debating between Habitat furnishings 8 inch latex mattress (6" dunlop, 2" tal) and rocky mountains 9" latex which is the same but also has a one inch organic wool and cotton cover on it. The price is only about $70 difference so that really isn’t a factor. Do you think that much wool will defeat the point of a latex mattress or just add a bit more comfort and temperature control?
Thanks!
Hi jasonbed,
Wool is a costly material and a good quality wool quilted cover can be a significant part of the cost and value of a mattress compared with a less costly unquilted cover.
Wool has many benefits including that it can be used as a fire barrier (so other types of fire barriers may not be required), it can lower the surface resilience of the latex which is a “feel” that many people prefer, and it can also add to the temperature regulation of the mattress. While Talalay latex is one of the most breathable foams … all foam is an insulator and can increase sleeping temperature for some people depending on how deeply you sink into it and on the other layers and fabrics and bedding above it.
A thin layer of wool certainly doesn’t defeat the purpose of latex and I think the majority of people would say it enhances it and is a benefit but there are others that feel differently and prefer to sleep directly on the latex and in the end it’s really a matter of personal preference that only your own testing or personal experience can decide which is “better” for you. It would also mean though that the Rocky Mountain option would be much better quality/value than the smaller price difference would otherwise indicate because the materials used in the mattress are more costly.
If you also add in the 5% discount that Rocky Mountain Mattress provides to forum members here the value difference between them would be even more significant.

Phoenix,
Thanks for the advice! That’s kinda what we were thinking about wool but just weren’t sure. Now I just have to decide if I want a foundation sold by Rocky Mountain or if I just want to buy a platform bed.
