Hi all, I recently moved and am in need of a new twin mattress. My stats: ~5’3, 110lbs, sidesleeper that runs hot, no body pains. Budget is anywhere around $1.3k, but preferably less. I’ve gone through the resources on this site and also the mattress and mattressmod subreddits. I was thinking of going for a 9” mattress but know I could go smaller because of my size. What I have so far: A 3” comfort layer made of soft Talalay (14-19ILD?) or Serene foam; a 3” transition layer of Dunlop or polyfoam; a 3” support layer of latex or polyfoam. I’m not really sure what ILD to get the transition and support layers in, nor have I made up my mind on the materials. I just know that for my size, height, and sleeping position that all latex or latex foam hybrid is ideal, but I know 6” coils can provide the same/similar comfort (softness) and last longer than polyfoam. I also want a mattress cover that doesn’t trap heat, but don’t know where to start looking.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I’m currently sleeping on a pile of blankets on the floor because my air mattress deflated.
You’re absolutely right that, as a lighter-weight side sleeper, you’ll typically need softer foam to allow enough sink for pressure relief, especially at the shoulder and hip. Firmer foams or latex layers can feel “too flat” or unyielding for someone your size, even if the mattress is well-built overall.
Between base foam and coils, coils will almost always sleep cooler. They also allow for more airflow and a bit more bounce/support, which can help with temperature regulation and durability. Given your heat sensitivity, I’d suggest leaning toward a coil base over solid polyfoam or latex base.
One great place to start experimenting with build options is this DIY hybrid latex tool: Build Your Own Mattress - DIY Mattress
You can play with different layer types and firmness levels to customize a build that fits your size, sleep style, and budget.
For the cover, look for natural or breathable materials like cotton, wool, or Tencel those will help with cooling and moisture-wicking. Avoid anything overly quilted with foam if you’re a hot sleeper.
Feel free to share what combinations you’re considering. We’re happy to weigh in if you want a second opinion!
Hi Nikki! Thanks for the reply, it’s much appreciated!
After some thinking and a lot of reading, I’ve decided to go with coils as my base. Right now I’m trying to decide between the 15.5 TPS coils and the 8” Bolsa coils. On top of that would probably be 2” of medium latex and 2” of soft Serene foam.
What are your thoughts? I’d love a second opinion if you’d still like to offer yours!
