My wife is 5’5” and 145 lbs. She is a 50-50 back / side sleeper. She has cervical spine issues and uses a curved orthopedic pillow. She also has lumbar disc degeneration and hip/joint/piriformis problems which cause and aggravate sciatica. She often wakes up in the middle of the night or in the morning feeling more pain/stiffness than when She went to bed.
She prefers to sleep only on her back on the proper cervical pillow. After her low-back and hip problems started, she gradually shifted to my side as a way to ease the discomfort.
She also don’t want to be too warm at night as she often get too heated in the middle of the night (hot flashes) and wake up drenched in sweat.
I am 5’11” about 195 lbs. I’m a back / side / sometimes stomach sleeper. Fortunately I typically sleep well.
Our current bed is about 12 years old, it is king sized \ memory foam only. We aren’t interested in a memory foam bed going forward. We are looking for good support without the bed being too hard.
We are really not sure where to start and would appreciate any guidance.
We live in near Philadelphia PA, USA.
Thanks

Hey needanewbed1,
Luckily, there are plenty of high-quality mattresses available to meet all your comfort needs, tailored specifically to your PPPs (personal preferences, posture, and pressure relief requirements). Our tutorials provide extensive guidance in this area.
If you’re mobile and can visit a few of our trusted members in the vicinity, it’s worth considering. @Magic_Sleeper in Pottstown, PA, and @ShovlinMattress in Fanwood, NJ (a bit farther but worth the trip) are reputable independent manufacturers and experts in finding the perfect mattress for you and your spouse.
In the memory foam category, adequate underlying support and foam quality are crucial. Ordering online with guidance from a mattress professional is now a viable option. @DLX and @EngineeredSleep, both trusted members, offer mattresses with high-quality engineered memory foam options.
You might benefit from a split internal comfort setup to accommodate different sleeping styles, which all mentioned providers can offer.
Many local or regional manufacturers provide alternatives to memory foam that offer pressure relief, contouring, and lumbar support without the heat retention issues.
Considering your wife’s challenges, explore @BackScience. Their “Series 2,” designed by a chiropractor, could be precisely what you need and literally what the “doctor” ordered. Dr. Rick at Backscience can discuss with you how their innovative designs promote better lumbar support and heat dissipation while maintaining spinal alignment.
This should set you on the right path to finding the perfect mattress solution.

The challenges that your wife has been dealing with are definitely something that I have seen throughout the over 20 years I have been working with customers and prior to that the patients in my practice and I can tell you that all of those issues are solvable, but there are times that customizations are needed.
As Maverick mentioned, I specifically designed Back Science to address the issues your wife faces. With the detailed information you gave, it would seem that the Series 2 would be the best choice. The exception there would be if you wife feels direct pressure point tenderness on the side she sleeps on, in which case, the Back Science Series 3 would be a better choice overall. If you are unsure or want to go over your situation in more detail, feel free to reach out to me and I would be happy to have myself or or one of my team members and we will be absolutely happy to assist you.
