Looking for a new mattress for someone with a bad back and hip

I’ve been using a Original Tuft and Needle for the past 3 years and recently have been having some lower backpain or tightness almost every day I wake up (I also have a bad hip that could use some relief). I moved recently across the country and had ordered another one but now before the pain started a couple months back. I’m still under the 100 day before to return the new one.

I’m really looking for something that can help relieve some of the backpain but still give me support. Ideally would like another free trial incase the pain is still ongoing and perhaps its not related to the mattress. I’d be willing to spend up to maybe $1500 at most. Any advice? I was looking at Costco and purple mattress but have seen mixed reviews.

Hey there drogbaguy and welcome to the Mattress UnderGround.

Purple is unlikely to be a solution, for a lot of reasons. Tuft & Needle has changed their formula since they were sold. Your foundation may be a component that needs to be looked at.

That said, I totally hear you on the back pain and hip discomfort, especially waking up sore or tight every morning. It definitely sounds like your current setup isn’t giving you the support or pressure relief you need anymore. The move could have exacerbated things, especially if your foundation got damaged or misaligned during transit.

Since you’re still within the return window for your new Tuft & Needle,It might be best to take advantage of that while you can. It might not be the mattress itself, but why take the chance. You may be better to step back and re-evaluate.

Sometimes it’s the combination of support layers, your foundation, or even your sleep position and body changes over time. But if it’s not helping, there’s no harm in trying something else with a solid trial period.

Keep in my mind, providing your preferences, sleep position, height, weight, even age can help narrow the selection process down and allow for better suggestions.

It’s also worth testing your current mattress on the floor for a couple of nights. If your back feels better, that points to your foundation as a possible weak link. This could be due to age, sagging, or poor support, especially if it’s a slatted frame with gaps wider than 3 inches.

Costco often comes up in these discussions because of their excellent return policy, which can offer peace of mind. However, their mattress selection can be hit or miss when it comes to specific support needs. Many of the models sold at Costco are exclusive to them and may differ from what the manufacturer offers directly. This makes it harder to evaluate what’s actually inside the mattress. That’s not necessarily a downside. If you find something that works for you, that’s what matters most. The key is choosing a mattress that truly fits your needs, rather than relying solely on the return policy and going through multiple rounds of trial and error.

As we get older our needs and preferences can change. A great pillow can make the difference from a great night’s sleep or a miserable on, and you might never realize it was not the mattress at all, it was the pillow. The foundation, as mentioned is another unsung component. You are not really just searching for a new mattress, it is the total sleep set-up and how it all works together that is most important.

Working with an experienced mattress professional who will listen, understand and evaluate your needs and preferences may lead you to a better final solution.

There are certainly quite a few mattresses within your price range that can offer the pressure relief and support you need. Mattresses like the Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Elite, the Glacier Sleep Apex, DLX Classic Hybrid, plus a host of combinations from latex manufacturers like Sleepez and Arizona Premium. Backscience is another great option as they will work with you to modify their mattress for directing comfort and pressure relief with additional lumbar support options. You may want to check with some of these folks as they will get personal and work with you to get it right.

Hope this helps,

Maverick
