looking for a supportive mattress in Canada

I’m more than overdue for a mattress upgrade - located in Canada (northern GTA). I’ve been dealing with some back lower pain issues over the past 6 months. I’m 5’8" 185 lbs and generally like a firm mattress. Hotel mattresses with overly plush pillow-tops leave me sore and stiff in the morning. During episodes of back problems my current, very old, spring-coil mattress makes it difficult to turn over. When I push against the mattress it just collapses and I get stuck in one spot until I can relax enough for my back pain to subside. Not a good situation. I’ve been sleeping on the floor on top of a doubled over down mattress-topper for the last few days. Too firm (no surprise) as I can feel my shoulder and hip bones, but it has improved the feel in my back.
I’m intrigued by a couple of the Canadian options listed here. The CBH Balancer looks to really help with alignment, though I’m wondering about the thin latex ‘mattress’ and whether it would provide enough support/resistance when shifting positions. The MFC Presto - with its ability to align layers for different firmness looks like a good option. I’ve also run across hardbed.ca which may be an option given that I tend to prefer hard - but the warnings on their site give me pause.
I’d be interested in any opinions given my context and experiences on how much resistance there is with latex mattresses.

Congrats on your new mattress shopping adventure! Great job on the intro, gmf001 too; looks like you have reviewed TMU’s process and have done your prep work well ! I’m sorry to learn that you have periodic back problems and hopefully a new mattress with optimal comfort and support will help ease that situation. Good to hear that floor sleeping has improved your back somewhat, the doubled over down mattress topper seems something of an improvement over your older spring-coil mattress. At least you have a temporary fix while researching your next mattress purchase…

Thanks for considering a purchase from trusted member CBH Wood Furniture! The Balancerimage from their site shows the Talalay latex layers within the zippered cover, a total of 4 inches. The unique part of the Balancer’s design, however, lies within the 4 inches of Talalay latex within their Tri-Slat support system, with the end result being 8 inches of latex working together. I am not familiar with hardbed.ca, so I took a Google stroll and checked their site out. They offer a 9" two-sided mattress utilizing a 3.4 lb. HR foam comfort layer on either side and an extra firm foam support core, no density given. Without more details, there isn’t a way to comment further regarding Hard Bed’s duabilitypotential. Not sure what warnings on their site you have concerns about, did something, in particular, stand out to give you pause?

It sounds like a firmer mattress and hybrid with springs will help.

Would suggest to compare to GhostBed Flex for back pain and with lower back pain. Its on the firmer side with a nice strong edge if you sleep on the edge and help you turn over to not sag.
