It’s been awhile since I have posted. Just bought a new full size hybrid mattress and now going through the dizzying array of choices for platform beds with no headboards or a foundation. I am really on a budget, but obviously want something that will be in good shape for years. Everything i look at seems to have some issue with it, bad spacing, squeaky, cheaply made, the list goes on. Still need something affordable. If anyone can help that would be great. will respond to any questions.
Hi Rob613,
Welocome to the Mattress UnderGround and thanks for your question.
Many of the Trusted Members sell quality, reasonably priced foundations. Since you didn’t mention your budget or the mattress you intend to use, it makes the recommendation a bit more challenging.
In general, I’d look for a foundation that offers:
- Slat spacing under 3"
- Slats that are roughly 2–3" wide
- Slats preferably around 3/4" thick, although some well-designed 1/2" slats made from the right wood can also perform quite well
Larger foundations, such as queens and kings should have the appropriate center support legs running head to foot down the center of the foundation if not used with a bed frame that already has them.
@MattressFoundations offers the Terra foundation, which I often highlight because it checks all the right boxes, as does their bunkie foundation. They are a bit more premium-priced.
KD Frames, Ironwoodbedframesandmattresses.com, Big Fig, and Avocado also make nice options. Avocado’s spacing is around 3.25", but with the tight cover design, it should still perform just fine for most mattresses.
The mattress you ultimately select can also impact the best frame/foundation choice. Factors like the mattress design and whether it uses a high-density base layer can play a role in determining how supportive the foundation needs to be.
Hope this helps,
Maverick
Maverick, Thanks so much. All of those look great, but outside of my budget. Anything on Amazon you or anyone else recommends. So hard to figure out.
Still not sure where you are with the budget, but this one is under $250.
It does not pay to get something on Amazon, just to get something. The wrong foundation can destroy your mattress. So, just proceed with caution.
full size bed. looking to get to around $100 - 200. Thanks.
KD Frames Ekko could be interesting. A little above budget. What are your thoughts. Also I see questions about no middle legs.
