Looking for build-a-bed vendors that offer 15 ILD talalay

Hello!

Seven years ago I purchased a torture chamber (er, Savvy Rest) mattress with a medium Dunlop base, medium talalay middle layer, and soft talalay top layer… From Day One I was in so much pain, that many nights I ended up sleeping on my couch. I finally switched out the middle layer for a soft talalay, and even THAT was too hard!. To make it bearable, I purchased TWO featherbeds and a wool topper that went on top. That finally was halfway comfortable, although not perfect. I have hated that mattress since the day I bought it, and will not go that route again unless I can find a soft talalay ILD.

Seven y ears later, the ol’ body needs something new, as I constantly wake up stiff and in pain. (And, I’m getting weary of fluffing the featherbeds every morning, as when they go flat they, too, get firm.)

I went to a store and tried a Pure Talalay Bliss (Beautiful) that was…heavenly (At least in the store.) BUT…the price point is a bit steep f or me ($4500 + for mattress and foundation). After dong some research, I found that the PTB mattress has 3" of 15 ILD, 3" of 24 ILD and 6" of 36 ILD. So, I thought I would try to replicate that combination in a DIY mattress. SleepEz seemed like a good starting point, but their softest ILD is 19. Same deal with some others I’ve researched.

So my question is: What DIY (build-your-own-bed) vendors offer both the 15 ILD and 24 ILD as options?

A second option I have considered is the Saatva plush, but I have read several online reviews from others who need/prefer a soft mattress that even their softest mattress is much too firm. And, I can understand why: their mattress has a VERY slim/thin layer of foam on top of the coils, which, I believe, are not individually wrapped, which would make the mattress more firm than one that has individually wrapped coils.

My preference is for a “health friendly” mattress, but I am beginning to think that all of the latex (health friendly) mattresses are firm little torture chambers–with the exception of the PTB. Sigh. Why can’t someone make a plush, soft latex mattress that feels like a Simmons Beautyrest? I sleep like a baby on those when I travel and stay in hotels.

For context: I am 5’5" and weight 116 (thanks to the “Covid 10” I have gained. :/)

Congrats on your new mattress shopping journey :slight_smile: ! Good to hear that you have safe access to a nearby source for mattress testing and comparisons. Indeed, the Pure Talalay Bliss is a beautiful, all-talalay latex mattress manufactured in Connecticut by U.S supplier Talalay Global. Thanks for checking in with TMU expert trusted member SleepEZ as a research starting point. I know from their website that SleepEZ sources Talalay latex from Talalay Global. If you contact Sleep EZ directly, they may have suggestions for your search.

As 15 ILD falls into the “super plush” category and would be more of a special request firmness, you may have better luck making a phone call and discussing your specific DIY needs with a manufacturer. Keep in mind however, that if you do find a resource that can special order for you, there may not be any remedy for an exchange/ return for a special order item.

From Saatva’s site: the Saatva Plush’s mattress’s innerspring construction features a Euro pillow top over a dual support coil system. The low profile 14.5 gauge coils in the upper top layer are individually wrapped, followed by a 1/2 inch memory foam layer in the center/ lumbar area for pressure relief. The EVERFLEX coils in the bottom support layer are 13 gauge thickness, providing a firm support layer to the mattress. What could be happening here is that for individuals of lighter weights/ BMIs, this type heavier gauge dual coil construction could be a little on the firm side.

Don’t be discouraged, ShopperGirl. You seem to have a good understanding of your preferences (talalay latex), a set budget, and a local resource for mattress testing. Stay on your current path and when you have time, please review the TMU trusted member directory, this listing includes manufacturers specializing in Latex/ All Latex mattresses.

Thanks for the PTB specs ShopperGirl! I almost have all those layers needed to recreate it. I do have to get the pure talalay bliss cover which I have a couple of sources for but I may want to use a tencel cover instead like posh & lavish so it wouldn’t be an exact recreation but it would be pretty close. Also my layers would not be glued obviously like pure talalay bliss’s. :smiling_face:
