Totally blew our budget on tempur-pedic for our main bed, but still without a bed for our spare. This will be used rarely in the near future as a spare bed. Over the next couple years it will transition to a nursery room and then eventually a kids room.
Initially i planned on buying another cheap Zinus since durability is not a big concern with the low usage over the next 5 years or so. However, materials (especially fiberglass) and lack of transparency are big concerns for me with those cheap mattresses.
So I’ve begun to consider DIY. i know generally diy can end up NOT saving money if things don’t turn out right, but seeing as this is not a primary bed, I’m hoping we can easily get things close enough first try.
The two mattresses we really enjoyed in store was the Pro-adapt medium (what we purchased), and the Southerland Osborn luxury plush. I’m kind of going off those for a build idea. Of course we won’t be personally sleeping on it until it’s a nursery, at which point there will probably be some nights spent in there.
So far:
-Tempur-pedic 3" topper - $210 (https://www.tempurpedic.com/other-products/tempur-topper-supreme/v/287/)
-2" 2.5-LB. GEL SWIRL MEMORY FOAM TOPPER - $45 (2.5-lb. Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper - Mattress Topper)
-5" (or maybe just 3?) either HD36-R or LUX-R foam $130 (Foam Mattresses | Foam Factory, Inc.)
-10" cover $130 sleeponlatex/organic-cotton-cover
Total cost $515
Any thoughts? We know we love the 3" tempur layer after trying all of the tempur beds. And I’m hoping the 2" cheap gel foam will be adequate to provide transition between the memory foam and base (similar to the 2" 3.5lb second layer on the Osborne). I’m struggling to find any other mattresses of similar specs and quality for the price, and it seems like it’s hopefully reasonably close enough to what we tried in stores.
