Looking for mattress recommendations for a side sleeper

So the last time I bought a mattress was many years ago and it seems mattress shopping has changed quite a bit since then with so many more options and technology in newer mattresses. I’m currently sleeping on a 20 year old Serta mattress (though it was unused for about 7 years of that time) that really need to be replaced. I’m waking up sore in the hips, shoulder, and lower back every morning.

I’m a 6’0" tall 165 lb male that is a side sleeper. However, I do tend to toss and turn a bit moving from one side to the other side at night. I usually sleep alone and am looking for a Queen sized mattress. I do not like super firm mattresses but I’m also not a fan of pure memory foam as I don’t really like the feeling of fully sinking into the foam. Plus I need to be able to switch positions easily. I was looking at some hybrid mattresses because they seem to be a good middle ground between super firm and the memory foam options. I’ve seen the direct ship mattress companies promoted heavily online like Helix, Purple, Brooklyn Bedding, etc. but I’m usure of what to trust with all them. Though their return policies seem pretty generous. I was also looking at the Saatva Classic (they seem to have a showroom near me so I’ll check that out before making a decision).

I’m located in the Boston, MA area. So I’m open to suggestions for showrooms/retailers to check out to try mattresses. But I’m also interested in hearing from any of you who have a similar profile/body type as me who are side sleepers and if you bought from any of the online mattress in a box companies and what your experience was like.

Hi Vaotix.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

For anyone getting started we always recommend a look at our Mattress Durability Guidelines and nifty Mattress Shopping Tutorial

In your case I’d also recommend taking a look at our article about how to identify a quality mattress retailer since you’d mentioned potentially doing local testing.

We have a number of Trusted Members who excel in terms of durability and transparency as well at mattress industry knowledge and customer attention. Many of them offer bed-in-box options!

You mentioned you’re not a fan of memory foam. You might find a latex hybrid like the Owl by Nest Bedding interesting. Or if you’re wanting to avoid foam in general, you may find My Green Mattress options interesting, as well as BioSleep mattresses.

Of course, if anyone in the forum with a similar build to you has input, I hope they chime in with their experience as well!
