I have stomach issues that don’t allow me to lay flat when sleeping. I have to sleep at a 45-50 degree angle or more. So whatever mattress I get will be used in an inclined position when I sleep.
I’m looking for a mattress but I haven’t been mattress shopping in a decade or more and I really don’t know what I want, and with the current pandemic (and being high risk) I can’t go shopping in person. I feel like the more research I do, the more confused I become. There are so many online mattresses. It’s all a bit overwhelming.
The last real mattress I bought was probably 15 years ago. It was a very expensive pillow top mattress. Very soft. It was great for a while but then it started really hurting my lower back to the point I had to stop sleeping on it.
I’m currently using an old 6" futon mattress right now on the adjustable base. It’s actually pretty comfortable, except that it starts to make my tail bone/butt a bit sore after an hour or two of sitting on it. I’d probably just keep using it (with a topper added or something) but I need the futon back.
More about what I’m looking for in general:
I am 6’ 1/2" and about 235-240lbs and need a full sized mattress. I’d like to keep the price to $1000 or less.
I am open to a foam base but I think I’m probably leaning towards a hybrid bed with pocket coils (or an innerspring if they are adjustable base compatible?) for the added support especially at my weight. I’d try full latex mattress but I think it’s out of my price range.
thinking medium to medium firm. But maybe I want firm at my weight?
Sine I will be kind of sitting on the mattress when I sleep I don’t want something too firm that will make my butt sore from sitting on it. My current mattress does this.
and I don’t want something too soft that will cause lower back pain or not be durable for my weight.
I don’t want to sink in too far and be “hugged” by the memory foam because I tend to sleep hot in the summer and worry it would make me too hot (like my memory foam pillow does in the summer).
Any mattress recommendations in general for my situation?
I’m wide open to suggestions. Let me know if you need any more info.
If any trusted member has a mattress that fits my weight and budget, please feel free to contact me.

Sorry to hear that you’re dealing with these type stomach issues, BillsFan. I can only imagine the challenges you face finding a mattress suited for your medical needs as well as to your PPP/ personal preferences.
Understood; shopping for a new mattress in the best of times is quite a daunting task, let alone during the COVID pandemic, especially for those with high-risk health concerns. And indeed, there are many online mattress sources, more than any one person (even for us here!) to research. A good place to start is with our TMU trusted members as they have been strictly vetted and operate with the utmost in experience, knowledge and transparency. Most all offer phone call/ live chat consultations to help with your mattress purchase decisions, as well as generous sleep trials, comfort exchanges and extended return policies. It is always preferable to make store visits for mattress testing when possible; however, a phone call or live chat is helpful when site visits aren’t an option. You’ll want to prepare first with a list of questions, you may find Phoenix’s article "Finding a Great Mattress Outlet" useful for formulating your own. Of course, posting questions to the forum (as you are doing) is always welcome .
As people age, it is common to go through a variety of sleeping difficulties, some of which can be eased by moving to an adjustable bed sleep environment. With the 45-50 degree angle of your sleeping position, it’s no surprise that you’re experiencing soreness in your tail bone area; your 6" futon mattress can’t offer sufficient support over time in that position, as you have pointed out. Since I do not have experience making recommendations for individuals with medical conditions, I cannot offer opinions on what mattress may or may not be suitable for your situation. Just curious, saw that you had some good conversations with expert member Sleep EZ; looks like they offered thoughts on hybrid constructions, comfort layering options, etc. What did you think of their advice?
Hi sensei and thanks for the response. I typed out a super long response but when I hit post I guess something had timed out and it didn’t submit. So this answer will be a bit shorter than my last, for now.
I thought sleepez’s comments were very helpful. Their hybrid is definitely one of the mattresses I’m considering buying. It looks like a high quality mattress and I’ve read so many good things about SleepEz as a company. Everyone that does business with them seems to speak very highly of them. I did kind of get the impression that they thought their full latex mattress would be a better fit for me but unfortunately I just can’t afford it right now. Roughly $1000 total (w/tax + shipping) is about my max right now.
My only worry with their hybrid is that the 3" side might be too soft and the 2" side not thick enough for my weight. I wonder if I’d be better off finding a 1 sided mattress with a 3" latex cushion layer on top of the coils (if I go the latex hybrid route).
I also emailed (what I think is) their sister company - latex mattress factory. I was looking at their luxurion and natural mattress. Unfortunately they said the luxurion isn’t ideal for my weight and they said similar about the natural, though they thought the firm side could potentially be ok. They recommended a DIY mattress from them and that is definitely an option I am considering. I would get very good value for my money but having never laid on latex I worry about there being no return policy, only exchanges of layers. If for some reason I didn’t like latex (I think I will…) I’d be SOL.
I am still searching through the trusted member list and putting together a list of mattresses that interest me. Some I’ve looked at so far but haven’t reached out to yet:
Flexus quad hybrid. I haven’t reached out to them yet so I don’t know if it will work for my weight. I read someone saying they use softer coils but I have no idea if that’s actually true. I also worry a bit about all the zones in the coils especially since I’ll be using it upright.
GhostBed. But I worry it won’t work for my weight.
my green mattress kiwi. Again, I worry it won’t work for my weight with only 1.5" of latex.
That’s the issue I’ve been running into - finding a mattress in my price range that’s suitable for my weight.
I did also see the mattresses from Arizona mattress factory and that’s an option I’m considering too. I wasn’t thrilled that they don’t use a base layer under their coils, and also wasn’t crazy about the shipping & return fees but I can live with it as long as it doesn’t put me over budget. I also wasn’t thrilled that their full mattress was 74" long vs 75". My feet are already right at the edge of my current mattress. I’m not sure how big a difference 1" will make but I’d prefer to get a mattress that’s a full 75" long.
I’ve looked at some other companies like eco terra, amore, comfort options and DreamFoam/Brooklyn bedding (I actually called them and was very turned off by how unhelpful the sales rep I spoke to was. Then I called back and left a message but nobody ever called me back so I crossed them off the list) but I don’t think any of them are trusted members here.
Happy to hear you found Sleep EZ’s advice helpful; they are extremely knowledgeable in the latex space and could guide you through the process of selecting the right combinations of layering should you further consider their latex hybrid. Have you had a direct call with them or only the forum chat responses here?

You are correct; the two companies share the same ownership team . I know they specialize in DIY/ mattresses designed for higher weight ranges; in your email chat with them, was there discussion about DIY options other than all latex? I see from theirDIY component pageon their site potential for a hybrid mattress construction.
I prefer not to comment on these trusted members’ mattresses but rather hear more later from your findings and interactions with them.
I will venture to side with your gut feeling on the 1" difference in the AZ Premium full size mattress. At your height of 6’ 1/2" and with 75" of mattress on an adjustable base, it seems like your feet would be “close enough” to the edge as is. You may not physically feel the absence of a 1" distance, but is sounds like as long as you’re “aware” of the difference, it will be on your mind. Arizona Premium Mattress offers quality products and excellent customer support but given your comments, they may not be a match for you if you already have some concerns on their specs vs. your preferences/ ppp.
Keep up the good work with your research, BillsFan. Now that your list of candidates is slowly beginning to narrow, the real work of identifying your best choice begins. Looking forward to hearing more on your findings and good luck.
