Looking for the perfect bed for Labor Day Sale!

Hello,

I am currently in the market for a new mattress. I am still in the testing phase at the moment. I am currently in the trial period for a tempur-pedic proadapt medium hybrid. I like the bed and firmness to it but I sleep kind of hot on it and i’ve been reading a lot of research on long term memory foam use and possible health concerns. Also I don’t like how sensitive it is to temperature l, some nights I feel like I am sleeping on a different bed! I would prefer some consistency without having to play with my thermostat. Currently I am trying to find a mattress that uses natural non toxic materials. I tried a few latex beds at verlo, latex beds there felt kind of strange and like sleeping on a trampoline which I didn’t really like but maybe something I could get use to. Again I am happy with the firmness level and feel of this tempur-pedic mattress. I am very skinny 105 pounds so can’t have something too firm. I usually fall asleep on my back and wake up as a side sleeper or back. Wondering if you all have any recommendations that I could take a look at.

Thanks!

Hi Trilla,

Welcome to the MattressUnderGround.

Finding the right mattress can definitely be a bit of a quest! Based on your preferences and concerns, here are some mattress types and options that might align well with your needs:

1. Organic Latex Mattresses

While you found latex beds at Verlo a bit bouncy, there are other latex options that might be worth exploring. Look for mattresses with a blend of latex and other natural materials, like wool or cotton, which can help mitigate the bounciness while still offering the natural benefits. Brands like @Sleep_EZ, @Arizona_Premium, @TheCleanBedroom or @My_Green_Mattress offer options that combine organic latex with other materials to create a more balanced feel.

2. Hybrid Mattresses with Natural Materials

Since you appreciate the firmness of your Tempur-Pedic but are worried about heat and toxicity, you might want to consider hybrid mattresses made with natural materials. Alternatively, TempFlow offers memory foam options similar to Tempur-Pedic, but with Greenguard Gold Certifications for better safety. Although I also prefer natural materials and fibers, I ended up choosing high-quality synthetic foam hybrid mattresses and added an organic wool topper for extra comfort and safety.

3. Cooling Memory Foam or Gel-Infused Options

If you still like the feel of memory foam but want to address the heat issue, consider looking into cooling gel-infused memory foam mattresses. Tempflow’s patented design to promote airflow and breathablity offer a similar feel to Tempurpedic, but with better features.

4. Mattresses with Wool or Cotton Layers

Mattresses that use wool or organic cotton can offer a natural, breathable feel that helps with temperature regulation. Brands like Obasan and Naturepedic provide these types of mattresses and could be worth trying out.

5. Try a Mattress Topper

If you’re not 100% committed to a to an all natural mattress, like my solution, you might also consider trying a mattress topper made of natural materials like wool or latex. This can help adjust the feel and temperature regulation of the mattress of your choosing.

Key Considerations:

  • Material Sensitivity: Look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) to ensure the materials are non-toxic.

  • Remember your 4R’s (Refund, Return, Restocking Fee, and Reputation/Reviews (independent online offsite reviews), before you say yes.

Any new mattress you decide on will come with its nuances and adjustment period. Not only the mattress break in period, but your time to adjust to it.

Keep in mind you are just not purchasing a mattress, or in some cases just replacing a mattress. You bedding system is comprised of several components. Your pillow, its material, loft and feel should be matched to the mattress you select. Mattress protector should be applied to protect any warranty issues a manufacturer may require and it can affect the feel of the mattress. You foundation and sheets will also play a crucial role in the entire system. Sheets like DreamFit are designed with special features in various all cotton selections that prevent pilling and have patented corner elastic to keep the sheets from coming off, even on adjustable bases.

As you can see the entire system is import in your selection for a comfortable nights sleep.

I am quite certain some of the other expert Trusted Members wil chime in to address some of your very specific concerns, in the meantime good luck on your search.

All the best,

Maverick

wow. Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I am curious, what bed and exact wool topper are you currently using?

The mattress we sleep on at home is the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Luxe firmer side. This is the wool topper in a king

We wanted the firmest, but not hard mattress we could find. There are a lot more choices available since two years ago.
Vispring, Millbrook, Shifman, DLX, and some others now have better firm options than in the past, but the Plank Luxe has served us quite well for the past two years. I bought the topper, not necessarily because we needed it, but I recommend them often and just wanted to be able to speak from 1st hand experience.

Hi Trilla,

As a mattress designer, I have built and tested every type of foam and you are correct, that the higher density memory foams do tend to soften as you heat them up, though we found that our Tempflow Biogreen memory foam has somewhat less of that temperature sensitivity than what you would expect from Tempur-Pedic’s foam. Additionally, Tempflow has been tested and awarded a GreenGuard Gold Certification for having lowest possible V.O.C. ratings tested by any 3rd party organization.

You can take a look at the Tempflow EliteConforma medium Hybrid (www.Tempflow.com) for a more direct comparison to the feel, but also keep in mind that Tempflow uses a patented Airflow Transfer System ventilation system that gives up to 100 times more breathability than memory foam that doesn’t use any surface holes and connecting channels. With that said, I would also encourage you to take a look at Back Science (www.BackScience.com), since the Series 2 version of that mattress is a hybrid, but avoids any temperature sensitivity and was made to provide a higher degree of back support and even give more cooling than Tempflow, thanks to its gel type of memory foam and Airflow Transfer System combination.

In fact, in a recent TrustPilot survey of Back Science customers, 96% of the respondents said that they felt cooler on Back Science over their last mattress. I hope that helps gives you some alternative choices to consider and please write back if you have any other questions whatsoever.

My brother-in-law travels a lot for work and he sets his thermostat to 55 while he is away. When he comes back his latex mattress is hard as a brick and unsleepable. He called the manufacturer and they told him he needs to keep his house heated to over 70 degrees for this not to happen! Who heats their house over 70? That’s one expensive mattress when you calculate in the heating costs  So my advice is to make a mattresses using shredded natural latex as this hardening will not happen once the latex is in shredded form. Shredded natural latex works best as a base layer (it’s very soft) with a more supportive topper layer above. Just some advice from someone who makes their own mattresses over purchasing premade ones!

I am sorry to hear about your brother-in-law’s trouble with latex. I can’t imagine having to keep the house heated to over 70 degrees, even when away! Yikes!

We haven’t had that experience with either of our solid latex mattresses by Obasan. Perhaps the fact that they are insulated with wool in the cover makes a difference. One is in a room that is not always heated and the temperature gets down to 40 degrees, but the mattress seems fine. I can’t imagine having to keep it heated that high; that would definitely be expensive!

Ended up buying the naturepedic with soft coils and medium latex firmness on one side and soft latex on the other. the medium side feels great for back sleeping but i get a sore arm/bicep when im side sleeping. The soft side feels better for side sleeping but doesn’t feel as supportive for back sleeping. Where do I go from here? I guess it’s tougher for me since i’m a combo sleeper.

Hi again, trilla -
You have the unique good fortune of being able to try out both configurations at home. There are a couple of tweaks you could try to see if it helps your situation:

  1. Putting a topper on the medium side if you sleep on that side. That would cushion your shoulder and bicep. I would suggest a minimum 2". If cost is an issue, you could get a twin size and use it only on that side.
  2. Supporting your back more when you sleep on the soft side. Putting a lumbar pillow under your back and a pillow under your knees and sleep more on your back. When sleeping on your side using a body pillow to keep the spine straight.
  3. Another thing you could try is to swap out firm coils on the side with soft latex. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but having firm coils would support your back while the soft latex would provide the cushion you need for your shoulder and arms.

You may want to give a call to Naturepedic or wherever you got it for more ideas - but those are some things I would try.
FWIW, my husband and I have a zoned latex mattress and it took us several months of tweaking to get it just right for our various needs - but now we love our bed and miss it when on vacation! Good luck and let us know if we can help.
