My mattress search is a little different…our current mattress is very comfortable and works extremely well. I had the urge to move from a queen to a king. I thought it wouldn’t be a problem as there is a manufacture label on our mattress. However I am unable to find the company. I believe it was a local manufacturer here in the Phoenix area. The mattress is a traditional innerspring with wire edge and flippable with a pillow top on both sides. (“Coronet Traditional” made by Universal Mattress.)
Not having purchased a mattress in more than a decade I had no clue that this configuration was no longer common. I have been online researching and luckily found this site before purchasing a mainstream mattress. I decided to try a latex hybrid flippable made by a local company. It is a quality mattress however the foam is not for me. I’ve had a laminectomy on my lower back, arthritis and bone spurs in both shoulders, damage to vertebrate in my neck and arthritis in hip joints (trophies from an overactive youth!) I am a back to side sleeper. The “deadness” feeling and give of the foam after sleeping for years on the springy rebound and conforming pillow top of my queen mattress isn’t going to work. Are you familiar with Universal Mattress Company? Is there a comparable company or mattress that you are aware of? From what I’ve seen these double sided pillow top inner springs are not readily available? Do I need to have a custom one built? Suggestions?
Hey cnelson,
Welcome to The Mattress Underground ! Thanks for your question and my apologies for the delayed response.
Would you mind taking a quick snap of the consumer law label and sharing it with us? I took some time researching mattress manufacturers in the Phoenix AZ area and while it is possible that the manufacturer doing business as Universal Mattress is no longer in existence, the label may provide other clues as to the mattress’s origins.
Double sided pillow top innerspring mattresses are still around, but the materials in the upper comfort layers use a wider variety of comfort feel foams now (memory foam, latex, etc.) and more often pocket coil support vs innerspring/ Bonnell constructions. This is where the law label will reveal more details in the listing of materials used in your Coronet Traditional mattress.

I’m sorry to hear of your ongoing “overactive youth trophies” and can only imagine the challenges they provide when trying to rest well and avoid pressure point pain. I’m sorry to learn too that you found latex to have a “deadness” feeling, as most people find it to provide a lively, “uplifting” feel to a mattress. What type latex did your hybrid use and what firmness was it?

I haven’t found any information on Universal Mattress Company online but will look some more after reviewing the consumer law label from your Coronet Traditional. Once we know more regarding the mattress’s ingredients, we’ll hopefully have some more suggestions for your research .
Thanks,
Sensei
