Lost in mattress world

I have been looking for and researching mattresses for about 3 weeks now. I have found a fantastic mattress for my husband and I but am not sure about it’s longevity and the materials used. This is the Simmons beauty rest NXG 200. The 3 different Simmons websites (Simmons.ca, beauty rest.ca and the website fir their NXG mattress) do not provide great info, which I know is a big red flag. I live in Cambridge Ontario and the ONLY retailer that Carries this line of mattresses is sears. Sleep Ezzz will order it in for me for much cheaper. This is what’s in the mattress: I’ll start from top to bottom. 1) 1" NXG advanced foam (not sure what this is. Sales rep says its the most advanced memory and gel foam combination.) 2) 1" advanced memory foam. 3) 1.5" reg foam ( I don’t have info as to what what reg foam means) then “advanced” pocket coils and on the bottom 1" energy foam. This bed is $1600 including taxes. I’m having a difficult time finding reviews for this bed. (only 6 online) or what NXG foam is made out of/weight etc. the sales rep can call his Simmons rep with any questions I have. What exactly should I ask and what should I look for in a mattress that hopefully will not end up sagging. My husband and I are both side sleepers and move around A LOT while we sleep. Out of all the mattresses I tested (including tempur pedic and icomfort) this one was by far the most relaxing and pressure releaving. I’m half way thru reading the website and what to look for but any info on this particular mattress would be appreciated!! Thanks.

Hi Keren,

Here’s the possible “translation” of the layers …

NXG memory foam is a 3.5 lb breathable memory foam. Most of the NXG series used this.

NXG “advanced” memory foam is a 5 lb breathable memory foam and this is generally only used in the higher models along with some of the “regular” NXG.

PurFoam is conventional polyfoam in the 1.2 - 1.5 lb density range (the kind that can soften more quickly than higher quality materials).

The Energy foam is an inch of firm polyfoam that is used under the innerspring as a stabilization and shock absorbing layer for the innersprings.

I would never buy a mattress where the person selling it couldn’t tell me the exact details (or get them from the manufacturer) … especially at the prices you are looking at. This is why I suggest in this article to avoid all major brands or for that matter any mattress where the manufacturer or retailer can’t tell you the details about what is in it.

Even though it may be different in Canada … the odds are good that you have 3.5 lb memory foam (I believe the “advanced” may not be accurate in this model) and you definitely have 1.5" of lower density polyfoam in the mix as well.

If you look at the higher level NXG 500 here you will see it uses “advanced” memory foam (5 lbs). At the same outlet … the NXG 200 is listed at the same outlet as using only “next generation” memory foam (3.5 lb).

The innersprings are fine and they would not be the “weak link” of the mattress which is almost always in the lower quality/density foams used in the comfort layers.

Even the lowest quality materials in the right layering can feel fine in a showroom … the problem is that how they will feel and perform in a year or two … especially when you are spending this much … is just as important.

Like all major brands with only very rare exceptions … I would avoid this.

Post #2 here has some of the better possibilities within reasonable driving distance of the Cambridge area that I’m aware of and may help you find much better quality/value no matter what type of mattress best suits your needs and preferences.

You are fantastic thank you. I will check out the places you have listed in your previous post and hopefully find the good quality and comfort I’m looking for. Your site is amazing. Thank you again

That is the “pocketed coil system”. It is a good mattress and should last about 7 or 8 years (as long as you are not too heavy). You are paying for the Simmons name. I suggest that you search online for a “discount mattress store” in your area. Some of them will also carry the same exact pocketed coil system at lower prices. You don’t need to pay the extra for the Simmons name for it will be the same system. As far as that system goes… you have to have some type of foam that will lay on the top of the coils. It is better to use latex but that cost more. Hopefully they will not use a flimsy foam.
Then you find a layer of poly for the top. You can feel the density of that by pressing down with your hands and comparing to other mattresses. That top layer should be dense foam.
