LOVE My Latex Mattress, but WITH a Mattress Pad

I LOVE THIS MATTRESS, and am writing both to say “thank you” to TMU…and to share my experience getting to the point of loving to get into bed at night. Firstly, thank you TMU for your help months ago when I was trying to decide on a new mattress, AND for the super discount that I used when purchasing. I have hypermobile joints (EDS) and am chemically sensitive, so choosing my next mattress was a big deal. Most are uncomfortable for me, including memory foam. After months of research, I purchased an organic latex mattress from SleepEZ. I purchased a soft top layer, medium middle, and dense bottom. I just wish I’d trusted my instincts and purchased a medium top layer too (I could have exchanged it but was in the midst of moving and work, so didn’t deal with it in time). At first, I found the mattress too warm and itchy (the mattress cover is organic cotton and wool, and, yeah, I’m sensitive to the wool, which made me itch through the cotton and sheet). Here are the tweaks I made to make my new bed PERFECT-- (1) I put the soft top layer under the medium layer, which provide more support, and (2) I put a high-quality cotton mattress pad over the cotton/wool mattress cover. I know that some of the literature says that covering the latex with a pad defeats the value of the latex. THAT WAS NOT MY EXPERIENCE. For me, it made a tremendous positive difference. I’m sharing this in case anyone else with EDS is trying to find a mattress option that provides the perfect combination of softness next to your skin (I think pressure on the skin causes at least 50% of the pain during the night) AND great support for joints that don’t do enough of the work themselves. I’ve even found that I can sleep on my side on my latex mattress without shoulder pain. It’s been a remarkable experience. But, again, for me it only got to the remarkable level with a high-quality cotton mattress pad added to the mix. I am not a lover of sleep, but getting into my latex bed is a highpoint of my day.

Hi JZJ,

Thanks for your update! And congratulations on your new SleepEZ mattress. :cheer: You certainly chose something using high quality and durable materials.

I appreciate you taking the time to describe in detail your process and how the addition of your cotton mattress pad increased your surface comfort tension and allowed for a better comfort for your hyper-mobile joints (EDS).

I’m happy that you’re sleeping better!

Hello!

May I ask which cotton mattress pad you purchased? Also, how is the ticking on the SleepEZ Organic Mattress? I am not sensitive to wool, but my partner really prefers something with stretch…

Thank you~
BB

Hi BB,

I just saw your message. I bought the mattress with the cotton/wool cover it came with and then just put a good quality store-bought cotton mattress pad over it. The SleepEZ pad made me itch through the sheet, so adding the additional layer added both comfort and itch-free sleep. I also think it made it cooler (I live in a very hot climate, so cooler is noticeable).

Also, having loved the mattress for over a year now, I’ve also learned that I love the organic cotton sheets that came with mine. Using a cotton blanket also helps keep me cool. In the winter, I just add a down alternative blanket on top of that.

I’ve never been as happy or pain free with any mattress I’ve slept on…ever!

I hope you’ve been enjoying your mattress as well!
