Luma Hybrid (from 2019) has a dip and they are out of business/ Fixable or just replace?

My Luma Hybrid has managed to get a serious dip around the waste. I’m not sure if this is partially due to me sleeping in the exact same spot (I’m 6’1 240, wife was pregnant with an extra pillow, so I have mostly slept on my side near the edge) or somewhat related to moving where the movers did a taco with the mattress and wrapped it up tight, or a combination of the two (it didn’t seem as bad before the move, but :man_shrugging:?)

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure if I’ve loved it, because it seems like it was worse than the Tuft and Needle that came before it for side/stomach-ish sleeping, though it usually felt amazing the first hour or two. In the mornings I tended to lay on my back to relax before getting up. Wife did not complain, she likes the springiness overall (also a side sleeper, also loves to sit in bed).

I’d like to salvage it if I can put a new latex layer in, but I’m not sure if it’s the springs or latex, if there’s fiberglass or the layers are glued together making this a fools errand in any case.

If I’m replacing, I was kind of thinking something with a bit more support near the waist might be better, but I’m open to another similar mattress - I’m just trying to find out what went wrong with this mattress, or if this mattress was wrong for me, before buying another and ending up in a similar position. That said, I was looking at the Sleep EZ Hybrid/APM Ultimate Hybrid or something similar.

I’ve got an extra Sleep On Latex topper we’re using that my wife also loves, we’ve only been using it for a few months (was originally for improving a crappy couch bed)

I’m sorry to hear you are having issues with your Luma sleep and since they are now out of business nothing much you can do about a warranty. Fiberglass is a thing of the past so should not be an issue if you try to take it apart and inspect the insides to see what you can salvage. Putting at least a 3" layer of latex over a good coil should work fine. If you see that the coil has issues then you might want to consider our Ultimate Hybrid with the zoning in the middle. Whatever you decide to do I think you can now appreciate the simplicity of having a zippered mattress cover which allows easy access to all the components. This also gives you the ability to rotate and flip that top layer of latex which will greatly increase the overall durability.

Posting my findings in case it’s useful to anyone else:

I pulled the mattress apart. At least the top couple of layers are glued together. The package is surrounded by sewed-shut muslin cloth. I cut that open. The top layer is latex, which is glued to a synthetic fabric. That fabric is glued to the fabric of the pocketed coils. Replacing or flipping the latex layer would require removing the fabric from the springs or the latex from the fabric, and it’d probably be easiest to remove the fabric from the springs, but probably a lot of work to do so in any case. I didn’t remove much, only enough to explore this a bit.

In my case, the latex layer had lost it’s integrity in a couple of spots near the center of the mattress. In the worst spot, I was able to feel through the holes in the latex that the springs had also delaminated from the fabric and seemed to be floating and not straight in there. A little hard to tell without completely tearing this apart, but we still need to sleep on it for a bit so I didn’t want to go that far.

My personal guess is that the springs may have fine or partially delaminated before from the fabric layer, and maybe the latex layer was a bit worn, but everything was mostly okay for sleeping, as it wasn’t terribly noticeable before we moved. When the mattress was folded an half, they got really wonky and then more rapidly deteriorated the pocket layer and/or the latex layer because the springs were also no longer in their pockets.

So, I don’t think it’s trivially salvageable, and the act of separating the layers will either render the springs or latex useless.
