Luma Sleep: Any experiences?

Hello,

Has anyone heard of or had experiences with Luma Sleep? Their mattresses seem to be made of high quality materials and are backed by a very nice 1 year return policy! Seems perfect except that I can’t find any reviews. I know that reviews are not what I should base my own purchase on (due to my PPP not being the same as others’ PPP), but I would love to hear opinions on their company in general if anyone has thoughts regarding them.

Thanks!

Hi urkovs,

Luma Sleep was launched in January of this year (see here) and they are one of many newer online companies that have launched over the last year or two. Lumasleep is a trademaked name that is owned by Apollo Mattress LLC and they are based in Midgeville, GA.

Two of the three founders, Steve Russo and Jim Siragusa, have extensive experience in the industry and the third, David Barnum, has a background in design and marketing.

In terms of their mattresses …

While nobody can speak to how any specific mattress will “feel” for someone else or whether it will be a good “match” in terms of comfort, firmness, and PPP because this is too subjective and relative to different body types, sleeping positions, and individual preferences, sensitivities, and circumstances and you are the only one that can feel what you feel on a mattress … outside of PPP (which is the most important part of “value”), the next most important part of the value of a mattress purchase is durability which is all about how long you will sleep well on a mattress. This is the part of your research that you can’t see or “feel” and assessing the durability and useful life of a mattress depends on knowing the specifics of its construction and the type and quality of the materials inside it regardless of the name of the manufacturer on the label or how a mattress feels in a showroom or when it is relatively new so I would always make sure that you find out information listed here so you can compare the quality of the materials and components to the durability guidelines here to make sure there are no lower quality materials or weak links in a mattress that would be a cause for concern relative to the durability and useful life of a mattress before making any purchase.

The basic Luma Mattress includes the following layers and components …

1.5" of blended talalay latex
8" pocket coil
1" high density polyfoam stabilization and base layer.

It is available in two firmness levels and the mattress can be exchanged for the other firmness level for a year after a purchase.

The Latex Hybrid Slumber System includes …

The Luma Mattress
A 3" blended Talalay latex topper (with a choice of 3 different firmness levels)
Two queen size Talalay latex pillows
A mattress protector.
The topper can be exchanged for a different firmness level for a year after a purchase.

Their All-Latex Slumber System includes …

1.5" Plush blended Talalay latex
3" Medium blended Talalay latex
6" firm blended Talalay latex

The 3" Talalay latex topper in your choice of 3 firmness levels
Two queen size Talalay latex pillows
A mattress protector
White glove delivery.
The topper can also be exchanged for a different firmness level for a year after a purchase.

There are no lower quality materials or weak links that would compromise the durability or useful life of any of their mattresses that would be a reason for concern.

They also have a one year return/refund policy.

While the only way to know whether any specific mattress will be a good “match” for you in terms of comfort, firmness, and PPP will be based on your own experience … they do use good quality and durable materials and have a good return/exchange policy so they would be one of the options available to you that are worth considering if you are attracted to a latex/pocket coil hybrid mattress or an all latex mattress.

While it’s not a complete list … if you are attracted to latex/innerspring hybrids there are a few additional options I’m aware of are listed in post #2 here and the post it links to that may also be worth considering.

Thanks Phoenix. I am a bit curious as to your opinion about what real-life benefit there is to having the additional 3" of talalay latex topper (an extra $500 upgrade) on top of the Luma mattress. The mattress itself has the 1.5" of talalay latex already on top of 1" of memory foam.

Hi urkovs.

In very general terms … the properties and firmness of materials and components that are closer to the top surface of a sleeping system will tend to have a bigger effect on the overall “feel” and firmness of a mattress than materials that are deeper in the sleeping system, thicker layers or toppers will contribute more of their feel and firmness to the overall sleeping system than thinner layers, and a thinner layer would “allow” more of the feel and properties of the layer(s) underneath it to “come through” than a thicker layer.

With a mattress that only has 1.5" of latex on top of the pocket coils what you “feel” will be a combination of the properties and firmness of the latex and the pocket coils and the firmness and properties of the pocket coil would “come through” the thinner latex layer more but if you add a 3" topper then the top 4.5" of the sleeping system would all be latex and you would feel more of the properties and firmness/softness of the top 4.5" of latex and the pocket coil would contribute less to the “feel” and firmness of the mattress.

The only way to know for certain whether the basic mattress by itself or the mattress and the topper would be a better “match” for you in terms of comfort, firmness, and PPP would be based on your own side by side testing and/or your own personal experience but of course this isn’t possible if you can’t test and compare both of them before your purchase.

When you can’t test a mattress in person then the most reliable source of guidance is always a more detailed phone conversation with a knowledgeable and experienced retailer or manufacturer that has your best interests at heart and who can help “talk you through” the specifics of their mattresses and the properties and “feel” of the materials they are using (fast or slow response, resilience, firmness etc) and the options they have available that may be the best “match” for you based on the information you provide them, any local testing you have done or mattresses you have slept on and liked or other mattresses you are considering that they are familiar with, and the “averages” of other customers that are similar to you. They will know more about “matching” their specific mattress designs, options, and firmness levels to different body types, sleeping positions, and preferences (or to other mattresses that they are familiar with) than anyone else.

Hi urkovs,

I was contacted by Lumasleep and the information in my replies that they provided me when I called them was incorrect and the base mattress doesn’t include any memory foam.

The confusion is because when they originally launched their company the base mattress included 1" of memory foam on top of the coils with a 1" polyfoam base layer under the coils and then they had their 3" latex topper on top of that. The original design was only available as a mattress/topper set and now it’s possible to purchase either the base mattress, the base mattress/topper combination, or the all latex version.

I’ve edited my replies and the other forum posts that included the incorrect information to reflect their current design.

Hello,

First, I’d like to express my appreciation and thanks for the information shared on this site. Based on what I learned here about quality and my PPP, I just ordered a queen size Hybrid Latex Slumber System from Luma Sleep in the medium firm. The ordering process was smooth and easy, and I had a nice experience when I called in with a pre-purchase question.

I’ll be sure to post an update with my impressions when the mattress arrives!

Hi jvanwho,

You’re very welcome.

Congratulations on your new mattress purchase! :cheer: You certainly made a good quality/value choice. I’m glad you took the time to phone prior to placing your order, and I’m glad you had a good experience.

I’m looking forward to learning about your experience with your mattress after you’ve had a chance to sleep upon it for a while.

What has been your experience with your Luma Sleep mattress? I am looking into purchasing one and would like to know how you like your mattress. TY! Sarah

Hi Sara Katherine,

We’ve had our Luma Hybrid for over a year now and we’re still incredibly happy with our purchase. The mattress is well made and extremely comfortable, and is holding up well to my husband’s 6’8" and 260+ pounds. I would buy it again today. Let me know if you have any specific questions - thanks!

That’s good to hear! I thought about going with the hybrid, but after I spoke with Luma Sleep about an hour ago, and I might go with the all latex slumber system. He (Stefano) said it would provide more support for my back, neck, and shoulder issues. Which topper did you get - plush, medium firm, firm? TY, Sarah
