Mama Needs Sleep! Eco Sleep Advice?

First, let me say Thank You for providing such a wonderful forum wherein people are able to get knowledgeable, comprehensive advice from experts who go out of their way to help others. Unfortunately, that is becoming a rarity these days; so I applaud the owners, managers, administrators, moderators, and all of the helpful members of The Mattress Underground.

I spent the past few months doing online research and in-store testing with my elderly Mother, in order to find a suitable mattress for her. I’ve read all of the helpful information on how to better choose a mattress, and what may be best for support and pressure relief. Nonetheless, I also understand that each person has unique perceptions, body types, and possibly health conditions, that may cause them to view comfort levels differently.

My Mother is 87 years old and has slept on a traditional innerspring mattress for most of her life. Unfortunately, she has been sleeping on the couch, as she finds that more comfortable than her old, sunken-in mattress, which I recently put out for the trash. I temporarily moved an innerspring mattress from another room into her room, but she complains that the tufting on it bothers her back. So, she went back to the couch again to sleep.

She is not fond of memory foam mattresses, but is open to the idea of a latex hybrid mattress. As such, we checked out every store within a 20 mile radius and nobody had any latex mattresses, let alone a latex hybrid. She tried some innerspring mattresses, but did not like the high tufting on them. Actually, the only thing that she did like about some of the memory foam mattresses that she tried was that they had a very low profile cover, with little, if any, tufting.

My Mother has been recovering from a compression fracture in her back, since May. She also has osteoporosis; so at times, she has pain in her hips as well. Given my Mother’s age and health conditions, she is unable to go on a search much farther. In fact, just getting in and out of the car is a project in itself and we cannot travel to too many places, as she tires easily. At this point, she is in tears and has now just given up, which puts me in tears.

Consequently, I have to just purchase a mattress that would be best for her as far as support and pressure relief, and go from there. As such, I am leaning towards an APM Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress, as they seem to be better quality than anything in the stores around here, given that they are a trusted member of this site. Additionally, perhaps I may have better success in getting it right with only having one latex layer to decide upon. Given my Mother’s back issues, I was thinking of either the #28 Medium or the #32 Firm for the top layer, but I am not sure which would be best given her small size.

My Mother is only 4’10" and about 90 pounds. She sleeps on her back and has a Twin Xl adjustable bed, which has a sturdy solid platform (no slats). Due to her height and health conditions, she is unable to climb into bed easily, so I removed the casters from her bed to lower it. Even with that, a 10-inch mattress would be the highest that she could go with, but I believe that the Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress meets that specification.

Finally, after all of my blabbering, what I am trying to say/ask is… Under the circumstances of her not being able to keep shopping around for a mattress, do you think that the Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress would be a good choice for her? If so, would you suggest the medium or firm layer?

Thank you again for all of your knowledge and help.
