Mattress for Adjustable Bed

I have had an adjustable bed by Leggett and Platt for the last 7 years. The mattress needs to be replaced. To get a mattress like the one I have (Kingsdown pillowtop queen size) I was quoted almost $2,400. I can’t say my current mattress was all that great to begin with, so I’m looking for alternatives. I was considering the iComfort, but after reading some of the posts, I’m not so sure that’s the best option.

Hi lb24124,

The first thing I would suggest is to read this article. This will help eliminate most of the “worst” choices and help you focus on better sources where the quality and value of the mattresses you are considering will be much better. Kingsdown is one of the “major brands” that I would avoid … not so much because they are all so bad but because even the better models of the major brands usually don’t have nearly the same quality and value as the smaller brand alternatives … especially local factory direct manufacturers or sleep shops that focus on higher quality and value smaller brands.

If you let me know the city you live in I’d be happy to take a look to see if I know of any better outlets or manufacturers in your area.

The first half of the battle (and perhaps the most important) in shopping for a new mattress is finding an outlet that has the knowledge and service to explain the real differences between different mattresses and that really knows how to fit you to a mattress. Once you’ve found this … then the second half of actually choosing a mattress with the best materials and layering for your needs and preferences can be much more enjoyable and far less frustrating with the help of someone who puts your needs and preferences above their profit margin.

I’m in Arlington, VA. One difficulty I’m going to face is the inability to try mattresses in the store. I have physical issues that prevent me from laying flat or with just a couple of pillows. Setting the adjustable bed each night is a challenge in itself. Ultimately, as with most people I suppose, the only way I’ll know if a mattress is going to work is to use it for a few weeks. I’m just hoping to make an informed decision to increase my chances of picking correctly.

Hi lb24124,

While there aren’t a lot of great outlets in the DC corridor area … there are certainly better choices than others. Post #2 here should help a bit.

If it’s not possible to visit any of these … then an online purchase from a factory direct outlet that specializes in this may be the best option for you in terms of buying the best quality and value available. Many of these offer layer exchanges which means that you can exchange a layer of the mattress to fine tune it at a very reasonable cost rather than returning the whole mattress if it doesn’t work out well. Even here though it would help to get a sense of the general types of materials and layering that is best for you before making a purchase like this and you may need help if a layer exchange was needed to pack up and ship the layer you are exchanging. Another option is an outlet such as Costco or Sams Club and a few others which allows a mattress return at no cost.

Knowing the model of the Kingsdown that you had (assuming it worked well for you) or the suggested current “replacement” would be a good starting point to get a general sense of a mattress that works for you.
