Does anyone in this forum own a Nest Bed from Design Within Reach?
A friend of mine will be looking for a mattress for one of these and I was wondering about any user experiences. DWR tells me the frame can support any mattress on the market (latex, foam, innerspring) that does not exceed 10’ in height The frame is heavy duty and the slates are 2 1/2" apart so latex or foam should work fine. The height limitation is due to the design of the bed. It lifts via a piston so I imagine a heavy mattress would not be a problem.
I don’t have any personal experience with the bed but hopefully any of the members here that do will see your post and share their comments and feedback.
I noticed that the slats in your bedframe are flexible which in some cases can affect the feel and performance of a mattress (either positively or negatively) compared to solid slats that don’t have any flex and there have also been a few comments from some people have been able to feel the solid bar in the center of a bed that doesn’t flex with similar flexible slat support systems on each side but these would be more likely to be an issue with a thinner mattress than yours.
The slats are only 2.5" apart and overall it appears to be good quality and strong enough to support an all latex mattress so as long as the flex in the slats don’t have a detrimental effect in terms of PPP compared to a more rigid support system that doesn’t have any flex (which again would be less likely with a 9" mattress) it should be fine.
I don’t have specific experience with this brand but it appears to be well made, with a double head-to-toe center beam that rest upon the interior perimeter frame. You may notice over time, as Phoenix mentioned, some extra rigidity in the center area, especially as the bowed slats lose some of the springiness. Depending upon the mattress you choose, you may notice a difference in feel due to the bowed slats.
Personally I am not a fan of this slat system. I have seen a carbon copy of this used on bed frames running from $500 to $5000. Those slats have no ‘suspension’ on the ends where they are mounted which only allows the slat to bend one direction and really only from the middle. If you were using an innerspring mattress I do not think this will cause issues but I am wary about these with latex; they are heavy and flexible to the point the slats can really bow past a level point. We do not get very many unhappy customers with latex mattresses but of them a high percentage of people had used the same basic slat system as this bedframe.

I’ve purchased the Nest bed frame from Design Within Reach… and I have some issues. I’ve put a Saatva innerspring mattress… first a luxury firm… and it was awful. Uneven, heavily dipped in the middle… a disaster. We thought it was defective, sent it back… and got the extra firm mattress from Saatva. Much better, but starting to feel a dip again in the middle.
I’m well within the mattress weight requirements of the bed (< 132 lbs) … but i realized there is no center support from the frame to the ground. Is the mattress just sagging through the slats? Perhaps I should go with a more traditional Beautyrest type mattress?
