Mattress height variation from side to side?

Didn’t pay attention until today. When I measure the height in preparation of a custom bed, it’s 10" on one side, but more like 9.5 on the other.

Coincidentally, it’s the side that I have been sleeping on that is lower (I intentionally slept on the exact same spot for the past 4 months to see if it holds up). But when viewing across the surface, there’s no sag or any signs of wear and tear. Pressing various spots, no difference in firmness. No discomfort at night either.

Am I just imagine it? Or it’s within the normal tolerance?

Thanks.

Hi whoever,

Because of the softness of foam … it is never cut in a perfect rectangle in any of the dimensions. This can be particularly true with memory foam which is a more difficult material to fabricate. In addition to this … seams can make a difference as well as they can pull the edges of the foam down somewhat on the sides and in some places more than others. The foam can also be laid out in manufacturing in a way where it is slightly more “bunched” or “stretched” in one area than another … again because of the nature of soft foam materials. In most cases … if there was a way to measure a mattress thickness at various points across the surface (and the only simple way to measure thickness is on the sides because you would need to measure through the mattress otherwise) … you would find that a thickness variance is the norm.

I would say that you are within a “normal” tolerance.

I did opened up the entire cover for a week or so and struggled a little bit to put it back on, particularly on the problem side where the zipper ends. So that seems explained it.

Thanks for the reassurance. It was otherwise a perfect mattress.

Hi whoever,

The “trick” with heavier and floppy foam layers is to sort of “wave” them into position instead of pushing or pulling them which can cause them to bunch up (or sometimes tear).
