Can someone give me the name(s) of mattress manufacturers in Alabama? I read a post that said it was best to buy from a local manufacturer if possible, than from a mattress store.

The simplest and most effective way to find “your” best mattress is to follow the steps in post #10 here.
As you mentioned … once you have gathered some basic knowledge about mattresses and materials … the most important initial step is to “find the experts” which are usually local manufacturers or sleep shops that carry local or better quality and value independent brands. This would certainly put you far ahead in terms of quality and value compared to shopping for a major brand or at a chain store or mass market outlet.
