Mattress Needed for Aches and Pains

Hi all,

My husband and I desperately need a new mattress. He has cubital tunnel and has neck, back and shoulder pain. I have scoliosis, a frozen shoulder, and MS. We both weigh between 170-200 pounds. He sleeps on his side and back, while I sleep on my side and stomach. He runs very hot and I am currently dealing with night sweats. We went on a Celebrity cruise last year and loved their mattress. We also just tested out some mattresses and these were the ones we liked, in the following order:

  1. PranaSleep: Dharma Classic Plush (as well as their Karma Hybrid and Asha Classic Plush)
  2. TempurPedic ProAdapt
  3. Avocado Green ET

Our budget is under $2,000. Our number 1 pick was the PranaSleep Dharma Classic Plush, so we’d prefer something similar to it.

We’d be willing to build our own mattress, if we could figure out the inner workings of the PranaSleep Dharma Classic Plush.

What mattress would you recommend that would be comfortable for us but also within our budget?

Get the PranaSleep if you want. I wouldnt waste time trying to replicate it because you probably cant.

I have slight scoliosis. I am 207 pounds and a back and side sleeper. I used to have bodyaches due to a worn out Tempurpedic. I bought a BackScience2. No more bodyaches and back pain. Great support and no sagging. The Hypergel is so conforming. Ive tried a lot of mattresses…BackScience is phenomenal. BS3 is even more plush than BS2. BS3 is great for side sleeping.

Back Science > Prana

The PranaSleep is not a bad mattress overall. It was a proprietary mattress line developed for the owners of City Mattress Stores and has since expanded to some other retailers, such as Jordan’s Furniture.

City Mattress has a large presence in SW Florida, and their stores are nice, but they can sometimes come across with an aggressive “car salesman” approach, though that’s fairly common in retail. At the end of the day, the goal is to sell products. My brother went there and ended up with an $11k mattress from a Canadian company, James and Owen, which seems to have faded into the sunset, although the parent company still lives on.

In any case, trying to duplicate a mostly talalay latex $7k mattress for $2k is a tough challenge. I am sure if you spoke with the folks at @FloBeds, @EthicalMattress, @CST, and maybe @Arizona_Premium, they might be able to come up with something that creates a similar feel. I suspect it would land closer to the $3 to $4k range. That said, an all-latex mattress can be done in the $2k range. It will not have as many layers of latex, but it may still be able to duplicate much of the feel.

One issue that online reviews have raised about the Prana plush mattresses is that the plush comfort layers have not held up well long-term, especially relative to their price. In contrast, some all-latex mattresses from @SDMattressMakers and @EuropeanSleep may offer a better price to longevity ratio.

One thing I agree with @BillyIdol on is this. If you truly love this mattress, negotiate as hard as you can to get a price you can live with. A few things to keep in mind. What foundation was the mattress on in the store? If your foundation at home is different, the mattress can feel quite different once you get it there. You will also want some kind of fail-safe assurance if the mattress does not work out after 45 to 60 nights of sleeping on it. I dont believe Prana has a zippered cover, so what you get, is what is there, and exchange is the only option. Not that it bad thing, you just need to understand that when making the purchase. Know all the rules up front. Restocking Fee, Return Fee, Refund, and Reputation/Review; the 4 R’s. Ask all the questions up front. If your room is carpeted, be certain to test their bed on a carpeted section of their showroom, if your bedroom is not carpeted, then try to mimic the same in the showroom. It all matters.

Plush mattresses can feel amazing in the store, like sleeping on a cloud, but once you get them home and sleep on it for eight straight hours, your feelings can change, you may hammock or sink in too much, it can place strain on your back muscles. I would not expect this as much with a latex mattress, but since this mattress has other foam layers involved, it is a plush mattress, it is something to be mindful of.

The foundation, though, is absolutely critical.

Hope this helps,

Maverick
