Mattress Protector Size

Hi Phoenix,

First of all, thank you for all your recent advice. As a result, we now have a great mattress , from Texas Mattress Makers, that provides the PPP that we need.
We are planning to buy the St. Dormeir wool mattress protector but have a small dilemma. The mattress thickness measures about 12 inches when measured from seam to seam. However, the cushion and foam pulls the overall height of the mattress to about 13 inches. St. Dormeir recommends using the regular size of the protector for mattresses up to 12". For 13" or above, they recommend a larger size. The catch is that the larger size pushes the price up significantly. It seems like a minor point, but I am unsure which size to purchase. Would I be risking that the protector would be too tight if I order the regular size? Do these toppers shrink with washing? Is the real thickness of a mattress determined by the true height or by the measurement from seam to seam? Any insights you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks as always.

Hi Britchap,

The larger 24" thickness is usually less than $20 more than the 16" thickness (see here for example) so the difference isn’t very much but as you can see in post #2 here you will likely be fine with the 16" size although both of them would work

Phoenix,
Thanks so much for your advice on the mattress protector. I am now confident that the 16" protector should work fine with our mattress. Thanks again.

Just as I had the same question you posted this. Thanks!
