I recently tried the Deluxe Washable Wool Mattress Protector from Woolroom. From all my research it was supposed to be cooling/breathable, but I found it made my mattress way hotter. I am looking for a mattress protector that is more breathable/cooling, preferably one made with natural materials.
For context my mattress is the Luxerion Hybrid Latex Mattress from latex mattress factory. Sleeping on the mattress without a protector feels great, so I’d ideally like to minimally change the feel/temperature of my mattress while still protecting it. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
I have never used a protector..and is that wool protector you have thick?
The reasons people use protectors make sense though ive never had issues with a mattress without a protector. There are thinner and thicker wool protectors.
I generally find wool mattress protectors to be breathable and not inherently heat-producing, but performance really depends on construction and individual sensitivity. Quilting and loft can make a bigger difference than the material itself, especially on a very breathable mattress like latex. I have a quilted wool Cuddledown protector and fortunately it has not added any heat issues. My mattress does not sleep hot to begin with, and I certainly dont want to add any.
Since your mattress already sleeps well without a protector, it makes sense that any added loft, whether wool or otherwise, may be the culprit and could feel warmer than expected.
In situations where someone wants to preserve a very “bare mattress” feel but still needs protection, particularly water resistant, I usually lean toward a thinner double-sided organic cotton protector with a very thin PU membrane. The reason is they are still very breathable, and provides it provides waterproof protection while staying low-profile and avoiding the bulky, insulating effect of quilted fills.
Brands like Avocado, Birch, Naturepedic, CozyPure (not waterproof or PU layer), and Mattshield all make cotton variations of this style that stay fairly minimal in feel compared to wool quilted protectors. You can also opt for a cotton non waterproof protector, but you may have to deal with warranty issues down the road if something penetrates the layer.
