Have a 20+ year old Stearns and Foster (traditional) double pillow top that still feels good - but have an old wore out King at fishing cabin that has to go - plan is to move the old Stearns and Foster to lake and put in two twin XL adjustable bases into our king bed frame - and pick two mattresses that match but are suited for to wife and my needs. She is tiny, maybe 5’1 and 100 pounds and sleeps on side and stomach mostly - I am 6’2" and 225 - she is 60, I am 65. She has shoulder and hip pain, I have bad back, shoulders and knees and sleep on back mostly but side some. I was about to pull trigger on a couple of Winks, but further research suggested I might have fallen in an advertising trap. Friends swear by Sleep number, but all the research I see says otherwise – now I have concerns about the “gap” in middle of a split king - and also if I was to go latex, if it is solid, or slatted or whatever…way too much info running around in my head - any suggestions would be welcome - Thanks

BS2 is for back and side sleepers.
BS3 is more for side sleeper or sleepers that like a plush feel. 3 has a thicker comfort layer.

Based on what you mentioned, I feel as though you have a few routes you could take, some being more hands on involved than other.
Option 1: You could just replace the king at the fishing cabin with a more guest room friendly mattress and keep your current Stearns you have at your house and work with this model. There are companies including ours that has a DIY program where you can work with the current components you have in the Stearns, keep the good components and replace the worn out parts. This requires you to take about the stitching that is connecting the top quilt to the fabric on the side of the pillow top. Onces you remove the top quilting, you can see the foam inside, replace the worn out foam with new foam and get a custom zippered cover made to fit your bed. This gives you access to the inside of the mattress moving forward. You can even take it a step further and order twin xl foams that you can put side by side to make your side of the bed feel firmer / softer than the other side of the bed. Usually the springs in the mattresses hold up really well so you would just put your springs and other existing components in the new zippered cover and build it up how you prefer.
Option 2: There are mattresses currently in the mattress industry that are built already with a zipper that go around the bed, allowing you access to the components inside the mattress. These are also good options as you can change out the foams down the road if you wish to soften or firm up the mattresses. This is nice because you don’t have to get the same feel on both sides and gives you a lot more flexibility. We carry a Model called the Meadow Natural Latex Zippered Hybrid which is our Latex Wrapped coil mattress. But we can change the foams out based on your preferences. You can use google Gemini to help you find other models like this so you have a good variety of options and you can make a decision form there. Be careful going all foam though with a zipper because sometimes the foam is all glued together and you can have a really hard time actually trying to replace foam layers as it all rips together in chunks and can get messy.
Sleep Numbers tend to be popular choices but personally I feel the price you pay for what you are getting can be a little tough to swallow. My family has been doing Sleep Number Replacement parts for over 7 years online. It started out everyone who was reaching out to us were just starting to replace their foams and stuff in their models they had for 20+ years. However recently we have been getting a lot more customers who are already reaching out to replace parts in their beds that are only 3-5 years old. So that is never a good sign to see I don’t know what densities of foam they were using back in the day vs now but there is a patter we have been seeing which isn’t the most reassuring. So just be careful and do more research on them if you decide to go that route. One thing that is nice about sleep numbers is you have the flexibility to change the firmness / softness of each side with the air chambers. This gives you a much wider range of firmness to softness feels on a single mattress compared to just have a mattress that is half and half and what it feels like is what it is. No changing unless you change the foam. So there are pros and cons to every decision but at least you are doing your own research along the way. Given my experience, I wouldn’t recommend a Sleep Number. We had one several years back. It was painful after just a few years. The comfort layer wore out quickly and we were basically sleeping on the inflatable air bladder, which felt like a rock no matter how hard or soft we set it. It was awful. I hated it. I replaced it with a mattress from what used to be a Mattress Firm house brand. That lasted 6 years (and should have been replaced sooner).
I just bought an all-latex mattress (split king, so really, 2 twinXL mattresses) from Sleep EZ after some help from them here. I’m really hoping it lasts, but I’ve only slept on it for 1 night so far, so I can’t speak to that aspect. For now, I can say it’s got great firmness and support so far. Plus, I’m happy with Sleep EZ’s customer service both here and via phone/email. I appreciate that they’ll work with me until the mattress is just right for my needs. We placed our new mattresses on new adjustable bases. What a revelation that was when we tried it in store! I look forward to fine-tuning everything, maybe getting a topper to make my bed a bit higher? And getting some really solid sleep for the first time in years…

Sleep Number will hammock. Air does not compress. Latex will compress. Letting air out just simulates softness. It will just hammock a bit more.

My opinion after going through something similar with a wonderful 20-ish yrar old Shifman mattress was to try 2 other current highly rated brands, only tohave terrible back pain during the trial periods. After surfing the blogs, chats, and mattress forums and many folks offering suggestions. I somehow came upon WINSTONS in the UK and was surprised to learn about easy shipping to the USA. I am now 3 months into sleeping on the Shropshire bed king size, medium tension, and have never been happier. Just like the my old school well made mattress of yesterday and priced just a bit more than the top Saatva model. Despair has become joy at bedtime. The prices depend on the mattress. I recommend going to the website. I don’t have any words of wisdom for other mattresses. I had practically given up and wasdone with bad sleep, back pain, and wasting an unbelievable amount of time searching and researching mattresses.
