Just in case you haven’t read it yet … the tutorial post here has all the most important information, steps, and guidelines from many forum posts and articles over the years and can help you make the best possible choices … and know how and why to avoid the worst ones.
Tempurpedic for the most part uses good quality materials but you are right that there are also many other memory foam mattresses that use the same or better quality materials in much lower budget ranges. Anecdotally … they also seem to have more issues with the “new mattress smell” and offgassing than many other manufacturers although of course they are also the most widely sold memory foam mattress (thanks to good marketing more than for any quality or value reasons) so it would also be reasonable to expect that even if it was a relatively low percentage of people it would lead to more people people reporting issues with them than a mattress that was sold in much lower volumes.
While I can certainly understand the hesitancy … I would also keep in mind that there are many good online memory foam manufacturers and retailers that allow for free returns so they have much less risk and you can try them in your bedroom instead of a showroom. The tutorial post has a link to a list of the better online memory foam suppliers I’m aware of.

No … I only focus on helping people with “how” to choose rather than the specifics of “what” to choose because there are too many unknowns, variables, and preferences involved for anyone to be able to know which specific mattress will work best for anyone else out of the many thousands that are available based on a formula or “theory at a distance” (see mattress firmness/comfort levels in post #2 here).
