Mattress selection help: 5'3.5" / 117 lbs / back/side sleeper

I’ve been trying so hard to figure this out for myself but am getting somewhat desperate. There’s just so much information out there. So many conflicting reviews. I just saw a mattress on consumer reports that had “too hard” and “too soft” under the Cons list. SOS.

I’ve been on Mattress Underground, the mattresses sub-reddit, Wirecutter, and Consumer Reports for months now. I’ve been in multiple mattress stores. Please help!

“What Mattress Should I Get?”

Height / Weight / Sleeping positions: 5’3.5" / 117 lbs / back/side sleeper

Budget + bed size: Under $2k, queen bed. Currently have a box spring but happy to get rid of it and have my eye on a nice adult bed (Natural Queen Bed The Bed with PillowBoard - Beds | Thuma)

Am I open to DIY builds? Sure

Preferences/tendencies: Would prefer innerspring or hybrid. Would love an organic/green mattress but open to others. I get hot easily. Of the mattresses I’ve tried in-store I seem to like a medium firmness. I’m sensitive to other sleepers in the bed. I used to sleep solely on my back but thanks to sagging in my 12 y/o mattress I’ve started rolling from side to side

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Hi k_poz.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Definitely stay away from other people’s reviews. It’s unlikely the person/people who wrote the review(s) you read are identical in height and weight to you, as well as sleeping position and preference. Not to mention, most people review their mattress way too early. It’s very very very possible that a mattress I find way too firm may be too soft for you (it all comes down to our personal statistics and preferences).

As a back sleeper, the “gap” that needs to be filled in with the comfort layer for pressure relief is generally the small of the back (the lumbar area) and because the “gaps” in your profile are not quite as deep as in side sleeping, a slightly thinner top layer will generally work a little better. In back sleeping in other words a slightly shallower cradle is needed. A good starting point for a back sleeper is 2" of softer material on top of your mattress and then increasing or decreasing from there depending on other factors like weight, preferences, or other sleeping positions.

The Natural Escape from My Green Mattress checks both your organic preference and firmness boxes and falls within your budget!
The Certified Organic Hybrid Latex from Nest Bedding is also a beautiful mattress that comes in a medium feel, but does fall outside of your preferred budget.

I hope this helps you!

Thank you SO much Nikki! I had been eying My Green Mattress and am going to go with it. You’re smart to say I shouldn’t have been reading reviews, I think it really threw me off and made this process much longer and more stressful than it needed to be. You guys are the best!!!

Thanks k_poz.

A real, in-depth review after the proper time frame and including the reviewer’s sleeping profile can be incredibly useful but reviews like “this mattress was too hot” with no other context can be…less than useful

My Green Mattress is terrific. I have their crib mattress for my son and wish it was MY mattress.

Haha, love that! It’s coming this week, I’m so excited. Thank you again for your help!
