Mattress Shopping with a Chronic Illness

I found this site after getting tired of our base model Sleep Number bed, ordering a Purple mattress, and not liking it. I have read most of the info here, which led me to a “local” mattress store an hour from my home. I expended energy I don’t have to spare due to my illness. My fears came true and nothing worked for me. My husband is not picky. We are both around 130-135 pounds with BMIs around 20.5. I am a side sleeper.

The store, Comfort Sleep Systems in Branford, CT, did their very best for me. After nothing in the showroom was quite right, they made layers from pieces in the warehouse for me to try. Still no luck. I tried all-latex units with medium-firm and medium cores and various amounts of soft on top. I tried pocket spring core with various amounts of soft latex on top. I tried padded and flat covers. Everything was still uncomfortable on whichever shoulder I was lying on. Then we went to Ikea because it was nearby. There was nothing for me there either, but I did learn some things. I liked the feel of the pocket coil core at CSS, and I liked the feel of a microcoil topper at Ikea. I liked sinking into the soft latex, but nothing felt like it had the correct support. Everything was either too hard or too soft. I am apparently Goldilocks.

I have no idea what I should look at next. I need the pressure off my shoulders so I am not tossing and turning because my shoulders are sore. I also don’t want to go too many more places because it is exhausting and I pay for it for days, at least. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction!

Hi MelodyoftheForest,

Welcome to the Mattress Forum!

I’m sorry to hear about your health issues and sensitivities. :frowning: Unfortunately, there is no one “best mattress” or product for people being as sensitive as you are – it really comes down to individual preference.

Your own personal testing is by far the most accurate indicator of what might work for you, especially with your sensitivities, so my best guess is to try things out in person. I trust the people at Comfort Sleep Solutions, so I’m sure they tried quite a few different combinations for you. You said you have discovered that you like pocketed spring units at CSS, and that you like the feel of microcoil spring units in the upper layers at Ikea, so I would start there.

I normally don’t make a recommendation of a certain type of product, but since your energies need to be conserved, perhaps you may wish to try a mattress that uses a pocketed spring support unit and microcoils for the comfort layer? There is a brand called Naturepedic and they have such an item called the EOS and they have locations in Connecticut and nearby. Perhaps you’d want to read about them and see if a visit to one of their showrooms would be worth your time.

Hi,
I am the owner of Don’s Mattress Service in Massachusetts. Just to give you some background and a little knowledge, this is a family business that started with my great grandfather in 1919 on Portland street in Boston. From then until the 1970’s we were the second largest manufacture of mattresses in the area. In the 80’s the big companies started mass producing foam, memory foam and latex mattresses. As time has gone on a lot of these companies have even removed the spring from there mattresses and produce a lot of what you see today, a one sided mattress that is just chunks of some type of foam. Really a mattress that you can’t even turn over. Just another way for these companies to save money. Unfortunately this has become the standard that we have seen for many years now and unless you are over 35 years of age you probably don’t know of a better product.
So in that time my family has continued to manufacture a two-sided tufted inner spring mattress with cotton. The same way my great grandfather made them. Also our box springs are a real box spring with a spring in them covered in cotton the same way are mattresses are and covered with the same cotton material our mattresses are covered with. Best of all we stand behind our product and give our customers a 15 year unconditional warranty on our mattress and box springs. We are happy to give our customers a product that is affordable and that will last 20+ years.
Hope to hear from you,
Gabe Donadio
