Hi all,
I’ve been reading quite a bit on here for a while and am looking for help figuring out a bedding plan for my partner and me. I have GERD and my partner doesn’t, which means I need to sleep on an incline (~6" higher at head than at foot). But my partner hates sleeping on an incline, so we’re trying to get creative with mattress thicknesses and Twin XLs so we can share a King platform while getting our sleep needs met.
My info
5’8", 215 lbs, side or stomach sleeper (very rarely a back sleeper). On firmer beds in the past I’ve gotten some numbness in my arms when I sleep on my side. I also get lower back pain on mattresses when I sleep on my side and my hips sink too far into the mattress.
Partner’s info
5’7", 220 lbs, side sleeper. Gets lower and mid back pain when a mattress doesn’t allow them to sink deep enough in and their is a gap between their waist and the mattress. Prefers soft comfort layers that allow a fair amount of sink with enough support to keep alignment.
Current mattress: King Dreamfoam arctic dreams, ~3 years old, partner’s side has a 3", 4 lb memory foam topper. Partner really likes that side of the bed. But I can’t sleep on it right now due to the GERD issue,
So I’m sleeping on an old, firm 6" foam mattress with a 3" 3lb memory foam topper on it, which is all on top of a Refluxguard under-mattress wedge. I’ve had some lower back pain from this setup and am going to try removing the mattress topper to see if the firmer mattress will feel better due to less sink in.
We are hoping to get a new bed setup that will work for both of us in the same bed. We have a very low ceiling so I was thinking about getting a King platform from one of the many trusted members here who sell them, and then a thicker Twin XL that suits my partners needs and a somewhat thinner one that suits mine, which I can put at an incline. My partner has liked pillowtop-on-top-of-innerspring mattresses and memory foam mattresses–the most important criteria for them is a mattress that feels soft but has good support underneath the softness. I tend to like something a bit firmer, where I can feel some firmer support where I sink in either at the belly (if sleeping on stomach) or hips (if on side).
Because we are trying an experiment, we do not want to sink a ton of money into this until we know it might work. So we know that might mean mattresses that don’t last as long, while we try some different approaches to figure out what works.
One idea:
My side: soft or medium Arizona Premium Naturalex Twin XL, w 2" topper (for total height of 8"). Refluxguard foam wedge underneath this, which I expect will affect its feel a bit but I can’t predict exactly how. This will bring my head to 14" above the foundation.
Partner’s side: Magic Sleeper 12" Gel memory foam, Twin XL…
Foundation: 5" or 8" foundation from one of the many trusted members who sell them specifically for latex mattresses.
Is this totally bonkers? Should I be thinking in a different direction, or checking something else out? I’ve gotten a bit overwhelmed with the options but the budget we’re hoping for is somewhere south of $2k for everything, if possible. a bit less would be great, but sleep is important.
Thank you!
