It looks a lot worse and bulging in person.
I was in Sam’s Club the other day and as always, I walked past the mattress area, as I do when I go to Costco as well.
Lately, several folks have asked questions on other mattress sites about storing their mattresses. There have been various scenarios regarding why there was the need to do this. Among them, moving from one location to another with an existing mattress; moving to another location with a brand-new mattress either never taken out of the box or still in its packaging while in it expanded manufactured state; storing at various locations for future use to name a few.
Having mentioned while it ok to slide a mattress across the floor to another room, or to simply move the mattress out of a room to be transported elsewhere, I always like to remind folks, it is not a good idea to leave a mattress on its side for an extended period of time.
The are some obvious reasons, of course. Some mattress layers are glued together and the glue can release, layers can separate. Other mattresses are not glued at all and layers can separate and become misplaced and if the mattress does not have a zippered cover/panel, it may be difficult, if not impossible to return the layers to perfect position. There is the possibility of certain layers of foam that get crushed, pinched or dented into an unrecoverable shape or angle. Spring layers can shift, foam encasements can become dislodged and a whole host of other abnormalities and damage can occur if not properly wrapped, positioned correctly or not stored flat."
In another forum altogether, one commenter posted regarding the picture, “nothing to be concerned about.” I thought to myself, “I would not want to bring that mattress home and deal with it looking like that.” There is no telling what the condition of that mattress is on the inside.
So, the reason for this post is to query our #trusted manufacturers (Manufacturer-Retail Stores :: The Mattress Underground) for their perspective. Should there be pause for concern? Am I being overly sensitive about it? If the mattress were vacuumed sealed with plastic very tightly, perhaps there would be no room for internal layers to slip, slide or become unglued. Clearly, in this picture, the plastic wrapping is extremely loose.
So, a topic for discussion. Is it OK to store a mattress on the long end, short end or should it just be stored flat? Once a layer shifts, if the mattress cover or cover panel does not have a zipper, is there any fix for shifted layers? Does a very tight vacuum sealed expanded mattress make a difference when being stored on the edges. Not something I have seen talked about much.
