We got a new mattress, it’s only been 1 night but I woke up in such pain I barely slept. If I use a 2” memory foam topper on it will the breaking in still continue? Or would a topper just slow that up to the point where it’s better to just suffer a couple weeks and get it over with. I can tell that once all the foam softens a little it has the potential to be very comfortable, I just need to get there. Any ideas or information would be helpful
Thanks
Hey G35S,
I am sorry to hear you mattress is uncomfortable enough after one night that you are in pain.
Using a 2” memory foam topper can definitely help with comfort while your mattress breaks in. It won’t significantly slow down the breaking-in process; instead, it can provide that extra cushioning and support you need while the mattress adapts. Keep in mind that the topper might alter the feel of the mattress, which could change the way it breaks in.
If you feel confident that the mattress has the potential to be comfortable once broken in, you might want to give it a couple of weeks first. But if you’re in significant pain, using the topper could make a big difference in your sleep quality without necessarily prolonging the breaking-in process too much.
Another option, depending on the construction of the mattress is to do the mattress crawl in an attempt to speed up the break-in process. I dont mean doing a spiritual rain dance on the mattress, but if you gently crawl around on your hands and knees, you may get some softening at an accelerated pace.
Most foam comfort layer mattresses will often break in at a front-loaded rate, meaning they tend to soften more quickly in the areas where you apply the most pressure, like your shoulders and hips or all over when doing the mattress crawl. This can make a noticeable difference in comfort over the first few weeks.
Naturally, no one wants you to be in any unusual pain, but even with a topper, and the mattress not broken in yet, you may still experience some discomfort.
If you do not have a topper to use, you can always take an extra comforter, fold it in half and use it to cushion some of the firmness of the new mattress.
It took my wife about 3 weeks to adjust to our Plank Luxe mattress (it is one of the firmest on the market) but after a few weeks, she got nice and cozy, even as a 5’4 135lb side sleeper. So there is hope.
Just give it a chance before considering any drastic moves. Give it a little time and try a couple of the tips and tricks suggested.
All the best,
Maverick
